In destructive power, the behemoths of the Cold War dwarfed the American atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. Washington’s biggest test blast was 1,000 times as large. Moscow’s was 3,000 times . On both sides, the idea was to deter strikes with threats of vast retaliation — with mutual assured destruction, or MAD. The psychological bar was so high that nuclear strikes came to be seen as unthinkable. Today, both Russia and the United States have nuclear arms that are much less destructive — their power just fractions of the Hiroshima bomb’s force, their use perhaps less frightening and more thinkable . Concern about these smaller arms has soared as Vladimir V. Putin , in the Ukraine war, has warned of his nuclear might, has put his atomic forces on alert and has had his military carry out risky attacks on nuclear power plants. The fear is that if Mr. Putin feels cornered in the conflict, he might choose to detonate one of his lesser nuclear arms — breaking the taboo set … [Read more...] about The Smaller Bombs That Could Turn Ukraine Into a Nuclear War Zone

Six years after Austin Tice, a journalist and Marine veteran, was abducted while reporting on the war in Syria, his parents expressed confidence on Tuesday that he was alive. The parents, Marc and Debra Tice, spent the anniversary of Mr. Tice’s disappearance publicizing efforts to free their son, 37, who they believe remains a captive somewhere in Syria, entangled in the war. “It seems like, in many ways, the time has gone so quickly, but we know that, for Austin, it must be grinding on,” his mother said in an interview on NBC’s “Today.” Asked what keeps them optimistic, his father said, “Well, we know he’s alive, and we’re sure he wants to come home.” They also released a video about his abduction, “Now Is the Time to Free Austin Tice,” which emphasized the historic events over the past six years that their son had missed. He has come to symbolize the lethal hazards for news workers covering the war in Syria, where dozens have been abducted. At least five other … [Read more...] about Parents of Austin Tice, Journalist Seized in Syria, Are Confident He’s Alive
TOKYO (AP) – Japan announced Friday that it will jointly develop its next-generation fighter jet with the U.K. and Italy as it looks to expand defense cooperation beyond its traditional ally, the United States. The Mitsubishi F-X fighter jet will replace the aging fleet of F-2s that Japan previously developed with the United States. The nations will merge their current plans for development of next-generation planes – the F-X and Britain’s Tempest, a successor to the Eurofighter Typhoon – to produce the new combat aircraft for deployment in 2035. The deal will give Japan greater support in countering China’s growing assertiveness and allow Britain a bigger presence in the Indo-Pacific region. The announcement came four days after Prime Minister Fumio Kishida set spending targets aimed at building up Japan’s military capability, including a huge boost in defense spending over the next five years. To meet the five-year spending total of 43 trillion yen ($316 billion), the … [Read more...] about Japan Will Jointly Develop Next-Generation Fighter Jet With UK, Italy

Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 DETROIT (AP) — Workers at a General Motors joint venture electric vehicle battery factory in Ohio have voted to join the United Auto Workers union. About 900 workers at the new plant near Warren, Ohio, are the first to decide on union representation at a battery plant. The National Labor Relations Board said Friday that workers voted 710 to 16 for the UAW, a decision that is crucial to the future of the 372,000-member union. As batteries replace gas-powered engines, employees at GM engine and transmission factories will need places to work as their products are gradually phased out over the next decade or so. GM has pledged to sell only electric passenger vehicles by 2030, and the Ohio plant is the first to begin making battery cells that will go into packs that make electric vehicles go. The company has announced the sites of two other North American battery factories in … [Read more...] about Workers at GM joint venture battery plant vote to join UAW
BEIRUT, Lebanon — An American traveler from St. Louis was on a quest to visit every country in the world. He had only 10 to go when he decided to travel to Syria. Within two days of entering the country, he disappeared. Two months of captivity later, the traveler, Sam Goodwin, 30, has been reunited with his family, his parents said on Friday. There was no information available on Friday about how Mr. Goodwin was detained, or by whom. His parents said in a brief statement that Abbas Ibrahim, the head of Lebanese internal security, had helped negotiate his release. “We are grateful to be reunited with our son Sam,” the parents, Thomas and Ann Goodwin, said in a statement. “Sam is healthy and with his family.” They thanked Mr. Ibrahim, but declined to offer further details. According to his website, Mr. Goodwin quit his job at a start-up company in Singapore last year with the goal of visiting every country in the world. “I couldn’t be more grateful for the perspective … [Read more...] about An American Aimed to See Every Country in the World. WASHINGTON — An American fighter jet shot down a Syrian warplane on Sunday after it dropped bombs near local ground forces supported by the United States, the first time the American military has downed a Syrian aircraft since the start of the civil war in 2011, officials said. The confrontation represents a further escalation between forces supporting President Bashar al-Assad of Syria and the United States, which has been directing the military campaign in Syria and Iraq against the Islamic State. The American F/A-18 shot down the Syrian government warplane south of the town of Tabqah, on the same day that Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps launched several midrange missiles from inside Iran at targets in Syria, hoping to punish Islamic State forces responsible for last week’s terrorist attacks in Tehran. The Guards Corp said it “targeted the headquarters and meeting place and suicide car assembly line” of “ISIS terrorists” in the province of Deir al-Zour, where Islamic State … [Read more...] about U.S. Fighter Jet Shoots Down Syrian Warplane
