Man shot by San Francisco police was featured in video about homelessness, addiction

· December 11, 2019 ·

Family members of the man shot by San Francisco police in the Mission District over the weekend said Tuesday that his name is Jamaica, he’s 26 from Sacramento, and he recently became clean and sober after experiencing homelessness and addiction. The story about his plight with homelessness and addiction was featured in a YouTube video titled, “Jamaica’s Story” in which he recounts growing up homeless with his mother and siblings. The video was posted in October by CityTeam, a nondenominational nonprofit organization with offices in the Bay Area that serves people experiencing homelessness, poverty and addiction. Police say that two officers were responding to a report of a hot prowl burglary at 8:34 a.m. Saturday when they approached the man relatives identified as Jamaica and who police said matched the description of the suspect. Police said the man assaulted the officers with a weapon, prompting at least one of the officers to open fire. CBS SF Talks To Psychedelic Punk/Metal Outfit Hot Lunch

· December 9, 2019 ·

By Dave Pehling SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — When word surfaced earlier this year that not one but two members of local heavy rock favorites Hot Lunch were leaving Bay Area, there were some understandable concerns among fans that the change could mean the end of the band. A force on the San Francisco underground for 13 years, Hot Lunch was founded by singer Eric Shea after the split of his potent retro-rock outfit Parchman Farm in 2006. Shea managed to put together an all-star quartet of talented players, including former Mensclub guitar hero Aaron Nudelman and the pulverizing rhythm section of drummer Rob Alper — ex-The Sermon (he also played guitar with Sacto garage-punks SLA) — and bassist Charlie Karr, who was best known for his work with the Alternative Tentacles band Harold Ray Live in Concert. Hot Lunch soon became a fixture in S.F. clubs with their fiery live performances and expanded their audience with the eventual release of the group’s self-titled debut … [Read more...] about CBS SF Talks To Psychedelic Punk/Metal Outfit Hot Lunch

How tech became the enemy – then and now

· March 24, 2014 ·

The flyer tucked on the windshield of a tech worker's car on South Van Ness didn't mince words: "The Mission has been colonized by pigs with money. ... They help landlords drive up rents, pushing working and poor people out of their homes." The leaflet urged people to key the cars of wealthy new transplants: "Take action now!" The year was 1999. Todd Lappin, one of those singled out by the Mission Yuppie Eradication Project's flyer, moved to San Francisco in the early '90s and still lives in Bernal Heights. He's 46, owns a home, has a daughter, runs a neighborhood blog and, yes, works in tech as a product manager at Flipboard. No one protests him now, and the man behind the flyers has long ceased to rabble-rouse. In today's rendition of the play, new actors have taken on the roles of protester and protested - but tech remains the villain. Those who stormed dot-com offices in 2000 and blocked Google buses in 2014 both view real estate and city policy as the real drivers of the housing … [Read more...] about How tech became the enemy – then and now
