With the aim of creating awareness about rising air pollution levels, technology major Dell on Sunday organised an experimental event in collaboration with tech startup Chakr Innovation which converts diesel soot into ink (POINK) through their retro-fit emission control device for diesel generators. The technology from Chakr Innovation can capture over 90 percent of the particulate matter emissions from the exhaust of diesel generators without causing any adverse impact on the diesel engine."We support inventions which solve larger problems and are glad to partner with Chakr Innovation to address the issue of rising levels of air pollution in the city and initiate a positive dialogue around the issue," said Rajeev Kapoor, India Vice President and CSR Champion, Dell. The event saw popular cartoonist N. Ponappa sketching live cartoons depicting the harmful impact of diesel emissions on our health and budding designer Tahera Peeran showcasing her stunning collection curated with khadi … [Read more...] about Dell Partners With Bengaluru Startup to Curb Diesel Generator Air Pollution

SOUTH PORTLAND — A fourth air-quality monitoring station is set to begin operating Monday as part of the city’s effort to gauge the magnitude of air pollution emitted by petroleum storage facilities and other sources within and beyond city limits. Specialists from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection installed the station last Thursday and Friday at Memorial Middle School on Wescott Road. Laura Paye, an environmental specialist from Department of Environmental Protection, installs an air quality monitoring station at Memorial Middle School in South Portland. Derek Davis/Staff Photographer The state agency agreed to administer the yearlong monitoring program after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency filed a lawsuit last spring that called attention to air pollution and foul odors emitted by petroleum storage tanks and other sources across the city. It’s the first time the DEP has established a community air quality monitoring program in addition to … [Read more...] about Air pollution monitoring ramps up in South Portland

Air pollution is shaving months — and in some cases more than a year — off your life expectancy, depending on where you live, according to a study published Wednesday. Worldwide, outdoor air For the United States, it’s less, currently reducing the life expectancy of an American born today by a little more than four months on average. Those findings come as the Trump administration is proposing a loosening of pollution controls from coal-fired power plants. The administration proposal, issued by the Environmental Protection Agency this week, would replace the Obama-era Clean Power Plan, which aimed to steer the energy sector away from coal and … [Read more...] about Air Pollution Is Shortening Your Life. Researchers believe hundreds of people die each year because of Southern California’s poor air quality. Pollution levels routinely exceed the levels deemed safe by health professionals. In the report, the Long Beach and South Bay areas are included in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale category, where about 1,341 people are estimated to … [Read more...] about Southern California air can be deadly, study says; ports remain biggest fixed sources of pollution
A groundbreaking analysis of satellite data from 1 June to 31 August this year reveals the world’s largest NO2 air pollution hotspots across six continents in the most detail to date. Greenpeace (www.Greenpeace.org) analysis of the data points to coal and transport as the two principle sources of air pollution, with Mpumalanga in South Africa topping the chart as the world’s largest NO2 hotspot across six continents. Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) is a dangerous pollutant in and of itself and also contributes to the formation of PM2.5 and ozone, two of the most dangerous forms of air pollution. “It has been reported before that the Witbank area has the world’s dirtiest air, and now this analysis of high tech satellite data has revealed that the Mpumalanga province is the global number one hotspot for NO2 emissions. This confirms that South Africa has the most polluting cluster of coal-fired power stations in the world which is both disturbing and very scary” … [Read more...] about New satellite data reveals the world’s largest air pollution hotspot is Mpumalanga
