It hasn’t taken long for the 28-year-old tenor saxophonist Nubya Garcia to make a big impression in the acclaimed British jazz scene she came up in, and beyond. “She can play one note and you can tell what her artistic intentions are,” said Shabaka Hutchings , the British saxophonist known as something of a godfather to the scene. “She’s not trying to find her position. She’s expressing herself within a position that she’s already defined.” On Friday, Ms. Garcia will expand that role with the release of “Source,” her debut full-length album for Concord Jazz. It’s her most ambitious project yet — a sweeping set of jazz with Afro-Caribbean influences that funnels a life’s worth of experiences into an hourlong listen. “The focus of this record is about personal power, collective power, collectivism,” Ms. Garcia said in a recent Zoom interview, poised on a cream-colored couch in her London living room. “It’s about my heritage, my ancestry, exploring those places and those … [Read more...] about Nubya Garcia, Tapping Into the Past to Make Jazz for a New Generation

Can a Nap Make Up for a Bad Night of Sleep?
Q: If I get less than the recommended seven or eight hours of sleep every night, will a midday nap make up for that loss? Here’s why. The health benefits of good sleep According to 2020 survey data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than a third of adults in the United States don’t get the recommended seven hours or more of sleep every … [Read more...] about Can a Nap Make Up for a Bad Night of Sleep?

Alarmists: Climate Change ‘Making Allergy Season Last Longer’
Climate alarmists have found something else to blame on climate change, namely allergies and breathing ailments. According to a March 27 article in Bloomberg, a warming climate “is causing a lengthier pollen season, worsening allergies and respiratory conditions.” “This really shows another marker of how climate change could be influencing people’s daily lives,” said Allison Steiner, a professor of atmospheric science at the University of Michigan. Steiner foresees the pollen season beginning anywhere between 10 and 40 days earlier and ending 5 to 15 days later by 2100, Bloomberg notes. The North American pollen season lengthened by 20 days between 1990 to 2018 and pollen concentrations increased more than 20 percent, Bloomberg asserts, citing a 2021 study published in the academic journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of America . The U.S. Is Only “10 Years” Behind in Climate Tyranny — Byron Donalds on European Farmers’ Protests Jack Knudsen / … [Read more...] about Alarmists: Climate Change ‘Making Allergy Season Last Longer’
Cuba: Sham ‘Elections’ Make 91-Year-Old Raúl Castro, Elián González Lawmakers
The Cuban Communist Party held “elections” on Sunday in which 470 hand-picked candidates vied for 470 seats in the National People’s Power Assembly, the national lawmaking body — meaning every candidate was guaranteed a seat. No opposition candidates appeared on the ballot and several regional “elections” boasted some of the country’s most well-known and powerful political figures. The official newspaper of the Communist Party of Cuba, Granma , quietly announced Castro’s plans to return to public office in February with little explanation as to why. Castro, for decades the closest ally of his brother and fellow dictator Fidel Castro, officially retired from in 2021 from the presidency and the far more powerful position of chairman of the … [Read more...] about Cuba: Sham ‘Elections’ Make 91-Year-Old Raúl Castro, Elián González Lawmakers
