The low-pressure system that brought dark clouds and northwest winds to the coast Thursday night is now hovering over Northern California. It’s set to raise winds and rounds of rain in the Bay Area Friday before departing for Oregon. Dry conditions will then briefly return for the first half of the weekend, but the break from the rain will eventually be stomped out by a second low-pressure system. This system will follow the path left behind by Friday’s rainmaker, hoisting rain and snow showers across Northern California by Saturday night and into Sunday. All in all, this weekend is shaping up to be a mixed bag of weather conditions for residents across the Golden State. When will today’s rains let up? For residents waking up after 9 a.m. Friday morning, the good news is that the bulk of moderate rain showers will already be halfway to the Sierra Nevada. That’s because the cold front out ahead of the low-pressure system is forecast to roll into the Bay Area between 2 and … [Read more...] about Bay Area will get hit with rain twice this weekend. The construction of the tallest office tower in Africa on a sprawling, tree-studded city park here has provoked unusual popular hostility in a country where opposition to official projects is voiced with care. With arguments long familiar to New Yorkers, local environmentalists have charged that the 60-story concrete-and-glass structure will turn Nairobi, now a pleasant, airy mix of … [Read more...] about Plan for Sun-Hogging Tower Angers Kenyans

The officer and his partner were responding to a crash on Interstate 20 when their vehicle was hit Thursday, according to FOX 4 in Dallas. Only one officer was inside at the time of the first crash, police said. The officer in the vehicle at the time of the crash was able to get out and was walking over to his partner when the cruiser was hit by the second 18-wheeler. A Ghost Appears at the Marc Jacobs Show
“Fashion is life-enhancing. And I think it’s a lovely, generous thing to do for other people.” So said Vivienne Westwood, the gleefully subversive British designer who died in December at age 81. And so quoted Marc Jacobs, the erstwhile favorite fashion son of New York, as the epigraph for his latest show, which was a memorial of sorts not just to the influence of Ms. Westwood but also to the power and promise of great clothes. Heck, maybe to his part in the whole fashion system itself. Titled “Heroes,” it was held in the hushed, empty space of the Park Avenue Armory, left in darkness save for a row of chairs against one wall and a spotlit music stand. A single violinist was playing the jarring, dissonant notes of Philip Glass’s “Knee Play 2” from his opera “Einstein on the Beach.” Then from out of the darkness came the light. Or rather, a beat-up-looking cargo jacket and skirt glittering with Swarovski crystals, swathed and crimped into a bustle at the back: Ms. Westwood’s … [Read more...] about A Ghost Appears at the Marc Jacobs Show

THE ENGLISH department at Yale used to resemble a sort of English country estate. It included a great house of many wings and rooms (the Elizabethan Pavilion, the Metaphysical Poets Billiard Parlor, the T. S. Eliot Chapel and so forth) and, normally, one entered this house via certain well-marked paths and avenues that ran through a spacious park. The park looked as though Nature had … [Read more...] about THE TYRANNY OF THE YALE CRITICS
China’s Alleged Spy Balloon Tours America: Updates
Eyewitness image taken Wednesday that captures what is suspected to be a Chinese spy balloon flying over Billings, Montana. Photo: EyePress News/Shutterstock In what is surely the most captivating national balloon news since a Colorado couple falsely claimed their 6-year-old was trapped inside a runaway weather balloon in 2009, the Pentagon announced late Thursday that it is tracking a high-altitude Chinese balloon flying over the U.S., which is allegedly being used for reconnaissance. On Friday, China countered the allegation, saying it was a rogue weather balloon that had been blown off course. The Biden administration isn’t buying that line, calling the balloon a violation of U.S. sovereignty and, in response, has postponed Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s upcoming trip to Beijing. While many are taking advantage of this rare opportunity to make balloon jokes, Republicans are attacking President Biden for not blowing it out of the sky. Below is what we know about this … [Read more...] about China’s Alleged Spy Balloon Tours America: Updates
