The Newest High-End Amenity: Houses That Come With Horses
Plenty of luxury housing developments are built around glamorous perks: a manicured 18-hole golf course, a private beach club, even an exclusive on-site restaurant crowned with Michelin stars. Tucked in the coastal jungle of Western Mexico comes yet another hyper-luxurious real estate offering, this one banking on a novel perk: a pony named Karen. Karen and 48 of her equine colleagues make up the centerpiece of Mandarina, a billion-dollar residential resort gamble currently being carved into a cliffside overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Riviera Nayarit, Mexico. Its Mexico-based developer is betting that the palatial, celebrity-architect-designed stables erected at its heart — where the skills of two polo pros and their herd of athletic beasts are available to all residents — will help put this luxury outpost rising from the jungle on the It-people map. “With the ultraluxury market, this could be their fifth, six, seventh, 10th home — and it is touches that make the difference,” said … [Read more...] about The Newest High-End Amenity: Houses That Come With Horses

Blue State Blues: California’s Insurance Debacle and Gavin Newsom’s Future
California should be heaven on earth, but is en route to becoming the proverbial hell on a road paved with good intentions. The latest example is the state’s insurance debacle. State Farm, the largest insurer in California, said this week that it will stop issuing new home and business policies, partly due to the risk of wildfires and the cost of construction. While the left might blame climate change, the real reason is state policy keeping prices down. California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara — who authored the state’s own “Medicare for All” proposal — won’t let insurance companies charge higher premiums for the growing risks that climate change activists say are on the way (and that skeptics blame on poor forestry). The Wall Street Journal notes that California is the only state that requires insurance companies to set premium prices based on past risks, not on future ones. The intention — to give Lara the benefit of the doubt — is a noble one. Homes are already … [Read more...] about Blue State Blues: California’s Insurance Debacle and Gavin Newsom’s Future
