A series of atmospheric river storms has brought California heavy rains and above-average snowpack across the Sierra Nevada, but experts say the state still needs many more storms to begin to emerge from drought. The Sierra Nevada snowpack measures 174% of average for this time of year, but there are still three months left in the snow season, and the snow that has fallen to date remains just 64% of the April 1 average. “It’s definitely a very exciting start to the year and a very promising start to the year. But we just need the storm train to keep coming through,” said Andrew Schwartz, lead scientist at UC Berkeley’s Central Sierra Snow Laboratory. Advertisement Storms swept in from the Pacific last week, bringing torrential rains and triggering major flooding in the Central Valley and other areas. “The significant Sierra snowpack is good news, but unfortunately these same storms are bringing flooding to parts of California,” said Karla Nemeth, director of the … [Read more...] about California snowpack is far above average amid January storms, but a lot more is needed

Preacher Accused of Enabling Pedophile at Creationist ‘Dino’ Theme Park
Billy Summers had only known Kent Hovind a couple days when Hovind told him about the convicted child sex offender who sometimes visited Hovind’s Christian amusement park. They were in Hovind’s car, picking up supplies for Dinosaur Adventure Land, the creationist theme park that Hovind operates in a quiet pocket of Alabama. Hovind spoke about a longtime friend who had done time for battery and committing lewd acts on children under the age of 14. Hovind claimed the conviction was a sham, and that the friend was actually being persecuted for his work exposing the New World Order . But Summers was alarmed. “In my head, I was like, ‘well, I’m stuck out in the middle of Alabama right now, riding along with him, so I can’t say nothing,’” Summers told The Daily Beast. In interviews with former workers, and recordings from internal Dinosaur Adventure Land (DAL) meetings, people close to the theme park expressed concerns about Hovind’s cavalier attitude toward crime on the compound. … [Read more...] about Preacher Accused of Enabling Pedophile at Creationist ‘Dino’ Theme Park
Spanish court: Amazon violated labor law with delivery app
MADRID (AP) — A Spanish court has ruled that Amazon broke labor laws by forcing more than 2,000 delivery drivers to use an app that the company controlled for scheduling work and payments and requiring them to use their own cars and cellphones on the job. Amazon could not treat workers using its Flex app as self-employed because the e-commerce giant's Spanish subsidiary “assumes the authority to make all decisions regarding the service, setting the conditions of execution and remuneration, and the circumstances of the day, time and duration” of labor, according to the Madrid labor court's decision released Friday. Amazon stopped using the Flex app in Spain in 2021. Friday's ruling is the result of a lawsuit brought by Spain’s social security body following a 2019 labor inspection at an Amazon facility. The government agency is seeking to recoup payments that it says Amazon should have made on behalf of the drivers. Amazon has long argued that Flex was an intermediary … [Read more...] about Spanish court: Amazon violated labor law with delivery app
Ex-prosecutor’s new book details fight over indicting Trump
NEW YORK (AP) — As the Manhattan district attorney's office again ramps up its yearslong investigation of Donald Trump, a new book by a former prosecutor who once led the probe details just how close the former president came to getting indicted — and laments friction with the new D.A. that put that plan on ice. Mark Pomerantz writes in “People vs. Donald Trump: An Inside Account” that then-District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. authorized him in December 2021 to seek Trump's indictment. After scouring various aspects of Trump's life and business, including hush-money paid on his behalf, Pomerantz writes they agreed on a case involving allegations that Trump falsified business records by inflating the value of assets on financial statements he provided lenders. Vance was leaving office within weeks, but expressed confidence that his successor, Alvin Bragg, would agree with his assessment and see the case through, Pomerantz writes. But Bragg and his team had other ideas, expressing … [Read more...] about Ex-prosecutor’s new book details fight over indicting Trump
Alec Baldwin’s fatal ‘Rust’ case has ‘strong arguments’ on both sides, ‘The Crow’ producers’ lawyer says
close Video Alec Baldwin 'put himself in a box' claiming he didn't pull the trigger: Mark Geragos Criminal defense attorney Mark Geragos discusses the charges filed against Alec Baldwin in the shooting of Halyna Hutchins on 'The Story.' Alec Baldwin's defense attorneys and prosecutors will both have persuasive arguments in the fatal "Rust" shooting case if it goes to trial, according to lawyer James Brosnahan. Last month, the 64-year-old actor and film armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed were charged by New Mexico prosecutors with involuntary manslaughter in the 2021 death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Hutchins, 42, was killed by a live round from a gun that Baldwin was holding while rehearsing a scene for the Western movie. Comparisons have been made between the "Rust" shooting and another high-profile on-set tragedy in which 28-year-old actor Brandon Lee was killed by a dummy round from a prop gun while filming a scene for the 1994 fantasy … [Read more...] about Alec Baldwin’s fatal ‘Rust’ case has ‘strong arguments’ on both sides, ‘The Crow’ producers’ lawyer says
