August 9, 2022 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) — The four people killed in a weekend golf cart collision in Texas were a grandfather, two of his grandchildren and a niece who were visiting Galveston for a quick vacation before school began, police said. The crash happened Saturday after a driver accused of being intoxicated ran a stop sign and crashed into a pickup truck, which then hit the golf cart that was carrying six people. Police on Monday identified the four killed as Felipe Bentancur, 49; his niece, Destiny Uvalle, 25; and two grandchildren, Kaisyn Bentancur, 4; and Brailyn Cantu, 14. All four were from Rosenberg, a Texas city about 30 miles (50 kilometers) southwest of Houston, police said. Two others on the golf cart were critically injured, authorities said. The driver of the SUV, Miguel Espinoza, 45, has been charged with four counts of intoxication manslaughter. He remained jailed Tuesday on $400,000 bond, and it wasn't clear whether he had an attorney who could speak on his behalf. … [Read more...] about Grandfather, grandkids among 4 dead in Texas golf cart crash

Jessica Chastain Cozies Up to Ukraine’s Zelensky in Latest Hollywood Propaganda

August 9, 2022 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

As average Americans worry about record inflation, the price of gas, and soaring  crime at home, Hollywood wants to remind you yet again that what you should really care about is Ukraine. Jessica Chastain is the latest Hollywood star to lend her fame to Ukraine, meeting over the weekend with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv. She is the latest celebrity to do PR propaganda for Zelensky, following Ben Stiller and Sean Penn , who also traveled to the Eastern European country for presidential photo-ops. In addition, Zesensky and his wife recently posed for a Vogue cover shoot by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz. Chastain’s visit comes as Congress approved another $1 billion in weapons to Ukraine on Monday. In May, Congress voted to put American taxpayers on the hook for a staggering $40 billion in aid to the country. “American actress Jessica Chastain is in Ukraine today,”  Zelensky posted on his Instagram account over the weekend. “For us, such visits of famous … [Read more...] about Jessica Chastain Cozies Up to Ukraine’s Zelensky in Latest Hollywood Propaganda

A third of Brits face poverty with energy bills set to hit $5,000

August 9, 2022 by edition.cnn.com Leave a Comment

London (CNN Business) Nearly one third of households in the United Kingdom will face poverty this winter after paying energy bills that are set to soar again in January, campaigners say. About 10.5 million households will be in fuel poverty for the first three months of next year, according to estimates from the End Fuel Poverty Coalition (EFPC) published on Tuesday — meaning that their income after paying for energy will fall below the poverty line. The UK government defines poverty as household income of less than 60% of the UK median, which stood at £31,000 ($37,500) in 2021, according to official statistics. The predictions are based on new estimates from research firm Cornwall Insight, also published Tuesday, which show that the average household energy bill is expected to hit £3,582 ($4,335) a year from October, and £4,266 ($5,163) from January — equating to about £355 ($430) a month. January's forecast represents a 116% increase in … [Read more...] about A third of Brits face poverty with energy bills set to hit $5,000

Musk and Trump and a Little Steve Jobs

August 9, 2022 by nymag.com Leave a Comment

Illustration: Cold War Steve As one of four credited screenwriters on 2008’s Iron Man , Mark Fergus had a big part in shaping the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s foundational superhero: Tony Stark, the inventor-billionaire-industrialist-playboy played by Robert Downey Jr. According to Fergus, the character was inspired by an amalgam of real people — but none so much as Elon Musk . Howard Hughes had blazed the trail for all the stuff that Elon is doing now. He established that turf back in the ’40s — the way he’s running his companies, dealing with the SEC, the government, politics, Hollywood, and investors. That was our rock-star industrialist model for Tony Stark. But Howard Hughes — I think people don’t know who the hell that is. Back in the early 2000s, when we were saying, “Who would be the Howard Hughes of now? Who’s an industrialist who would also be on the gossip pages? Is there even anyone like that?,” Elon’s name was definitely in the conversation as the guy who … [Read more...] about Musk and Trump and a Little Steve Jobs

The Mets Are Having an Extremely Un-Mets Season

August 9, 2022 by nymag.com Leave a Comment

Photo: Sean Zanni/Patrick McMullan via Getty Images I can’t be the only person who takes cues for my emotional well-being from Mr. Met. Yes, fine: Technically Mr. Met is incapable of showing emotion, given that his head is a baseball, and his face that has been stitched with the rictus grin of the eternally doomed. But you can still tell what he’s feeling. When the New York Mets , whom he has loyally supported despite the sort of sustained abuse you’d never allow anyone you love to suffer through, are losing — as has usually been happening during the 59 years of his existence — he looks sad, forlorn … lost. Occasionally, Mr. Met loses his temper. Spending one’s entire life as an avatar of such a beleaguered franchise is a crazy-making enterprise, after all. These days, though, Mr. Met is not hanging his head in shame. These days, Mr. Met, alongside Mrs. Met , is taking selfies on the field, playing the trumpet atop the dugout, and generally making it feel like life’s … [Read more...] about The Mets Are Having an Extremely Un-Mets Season
