A third of Brits face poverty with energy bills set to hit $5,000

August 9, 2022 by edition.cnn.com Leave a Comment

London (CNN Business) Nearly one third of households in the United Kingdom will face poverty this winter after paying energy bills that are set to soar again in January, campaigners say. About 10.5 million households will be in fuel poverty for the first three months of next year, according to estimates from the End Fuel Poverty Coalition (EFPC) published on Tuesday — meaning that their income after paying for energy will fall below the poverty line. The UK government defines poverty as household income of less than 60% of the UK median, which stood at £31,000 ($37,500) in 2021, according to official statistics. The predictions are based on new estimates from research firm Cornwall Insight, also published Tuesday, which show that the average household energy bill is expected to hit £3,582 ($4,335) a year from October, and £4,266 ($5,163) from January — equating to about £355 ($430) a month. January's forecast represents a 116% increase in … [Read more...] about A third of Brits face poverty with energy bills set to hit $5,000

Yuh-Line Niou on Her Especially Personal Run for Congress

August 9, 2022 by nymag.com Leave a Comment

Photo: Ron Adar/SOPA Images/Shutterstock Yuh-Line Niou is used to running in a crowd. In 2016, she defeated five other candidates to win the Democratic nomination for the Assembly seat vacated by Speaker Sheldon Silver when he was indicted on corruption charges. Six years later, she is running for Congress against a dozen other candidates, including fellow front-runners City Councilwoman Carlina Rivera , former House impeachment counsel Dan Goldman, and Representative Mondaire Jones, in the newly redrawn Tenth District . It includes Chinatown and the Lower East Side, which she represents in Albany. If she wins, 39-year-old Niou — whose parents emigrated to the U.S. from Taiwan when she was a child — would become only the second Asian American elected to Congress from New York, after Grace Meng. She has been endorsed by progressive heavyweights like the Working Families Party and the Sunrise Movement, as well as by some of her fellow state lawmakers, like progressives Julia … [Read more...] about Yuh-Line Niou on Her Especially Personal Run for Congress

US inflation will likely stay high even as gas prices fall

August 9, 2022 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

WASHINGTON (AP) — Americans may finally be catching a break from relentlessly surging prices — if just a slight one — even as inflation is expected to remain painfully high for months. Thanks largely to falling gas prices, the government’s inflation report for July, to be released Wednesday morning, is expected to show that prices jumped 8.7% from a year earlier — still a sizzling pace but a slowdown from the 9.1% year-over-year figure in June, which was the highest in four decades. The forecast by economists, if it proves correct, would raise hopes that inflation might have peaked and that the run of punishingly higher prices is beginning to ease slightly. There have been other hopeful signs, too, that the pace of inflation may be moderating. At the same time, an array of other economic developments are threatening to keep intensifying inflation pressures. The pace of hiring is robust and average wages are up sharply. And even as gas prices fall, inflation in services such as … [Read more...] about US inflation will likely stay high even as gas prices fall
