Developers Embrace Passion for Pickleball
Vandalism , claims of torture and pressure campaigns are just some of the heavy-handed tactics enthusiasts have encountered in their quest to find a decent court to play their favorite sport: pickleball. A combination of badminton, tennis and Ping-Pong, pickleball was invented in 1965 as an easy-to-play pastime. After years of quiet popularity, it grew in popularity during the coronavirus pandemic, and devotees now cite it as one of the fastest-growing games in the United States. Sponsors and television networks are showing some interest in the sport, as are celebrities like Jamie Foxx , Stephen Colbert and Ellen DeGeneres . Pickleball has divided some communities over noise complaints and turf wars, but not all experiences resemble plots fit for a Mafia trial. Some cities are embracing the sport. China Shows Off Military Might as Xi Jinping Tries to Cement Power
BEIJING — China’s president, Xi Jinping , has opened a public campaign to deepen his grip on power in a coming leadership shake-up, using a huge military parade on Sunday, speeches and propaganda, along with a purge in the past week, to warn officials to back him as the nation’s most powerful leader in two decades. Wearing his mottled green uniform as commander in chief of the People’s Liberation Army, Mr. Xi watched as 12,000 troops marched and tanks, long-range missile launchers , jet fighters and other new weapons drove or flew past in impeccable arrays. Mao famously said political power comes from the barrel of a gun, and Mr. Xi signaled that he, too, was counting on the military to stay ramrod loyal while he chooses a new leading lineup to be unveiled at a Communist Party congress in the autumn. #XiJinping : Chinese armed forces have confidence, capability to defeat all invading enemies, safeguard world peace pic.twitter.com/Ka5atiBdu5 — China Xinhua … [Read more...] about China Shows Off Military Might as Xi Jinping Tries to Cement Power
China’s Communist Party Declares Xi Jinping ‘Core’ Leader
BEIJING — President Xi Jinping of China received a potent boost to his status on Thursday, when a Communist Party meeting elevated him to “core” leader, putting him in the same revered ranks as Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping. Mr. Xi’s newest title, carrying echoes of those political strongmen, reinforces his power to shape the new leadership of the party. It is also a warning that officials should fall in line, though some privately fear he has amassed too much control and has eroded traditions of collective leadership, built up to prevent a return to the arbitrary abuses of Mao’s final decades. Since he became general secretary of the party in 2012, the leadership “with Comrade Xi Jinping as its core has acted on its words and led by example,” said a communiqué from the four-day assembly of the Central Committee. “For a country and for a party, a leading core is vitally important,” said the document , which was solemnly read on Chinese state television news. In China, … [Read more...] about China’s Communist Party Declares Xi Jinping ‘Core’ Leader

Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 20 LOS ANGELES (AP) — The life of Los Angeles’ most famous mountain lion followed a path known only to the biggest of Hollywood stars: Discovered on-camera in 2012, the cougar adopted a stage name and enjoyed a decade of celebrity status before his tragic death late last year. The popular puma gained fame as P-22 and cast a spotlight on the troubled population of California’s endangered mountain lions and their decreasing genetic diversity. Now, with his remains stored in a freezer at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, wildlife officials and representatives from the region’s tribal communities are debating his next act. Biologists and conservationists want to retain samples of P-22’s tissue, fur and whiskers for scientific testing to aid in future wildlife research.
