Kim Norvell Des Moines Register Published 12:33 PM EDT Oct 15, 2018 Steak 'n Shake developers wanting to bring the fast food restaurant to West Des Moines are considering a location off Interstate 35 and Mills Civic Parkway. Initial plans call for a 3,400-square-foot building with a drive-thru near South 51st Street and Mills Civic Parkway, said Jared Hussman, a commercial broker with Keller Williams Realty. Hussman has worked with an unnamed franchisee for about a year to find a location for Steak 'n Shake in the Des Moines metro, he said. The group is considering a 24-hour restaurant, he said. They hope to open by summer 2019. The location would be visible from I-35, just west of McDonald's and Kum & Go and north of a new Sleep Inn & Suites. Makayla Tendall Des Moines Register Published 8:32 AM EDT Oct 12, 2018 A West Des Moines woman died and another person was injured in a crash in Marshall County on Thursday morning. State troopers said Amanda Lynne Wilken, 23, was travelling north on Durham Avenue when she ran a stop sign at 295th Street and Durham Avenue in near rural Eden just after 9 a.m, according to an Iowa State Patrol crash report. Wilken was hit by another vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle, a 25-year-old Newton woman, was injured and transported to the nearby Marshalltown hospital. Linh Ta Des Moines Register Published 11:18 AM EDT Oct 3, 2018 Employees at Bankers Trust in West Des Moines were evacuated Wednesday morning after several employees reported nausea and an odor in the building, said David Edgar, Assistant Chief for Emergency Medical Communication Services in West Des Moines. Five people reported symptoms of nausea, Edgar said. Emergency officials were called around 8:50 a.m. on Wednesday to the bank at 620 South 60th Street. A HAZMAT crew evacuated employees and tested the odor. Officials detected low levels of sewer gas inside the building. The gas can make people nauseated, but does not require treatment or hospitalization, Edgar said. No carbon monoxide was detected. The building was aired out and employees returned inside, Edgar said. Firefighters will make periodic visits back to the building on Wednesday to ensure everything is still normal. Hy-Vee opened its second Wahlburgers location in the Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines with promises of providing Iowans tasty burgers, healthy options and all of the Mark Wahlberg puns you could ask for. The restaurant — named after brothers Mark, Donnie and Paul Wahlberg — is the subject of an A&E reality television series featuring the famous family and their efforts to grow the chain. Passion for musician and actor Mark Wahlberg is still alive and well here in Iowa as 5,000 people took the Jordan Creek Mall parking lot by storm for a chance to hear and see Marky Mark himself during the grand opening of Wahlburgers. But while we know when we go to the restaurant we might get some glimpses of pictures of the buff Hollywood actor, how does the actual food taste? Aventura will be located at 9065 Bishop Drive along University Avenue, just west of Des Moines Golf and Country Club. The for-sale condominiums are marketed for older residents who do not need assisted living. "Aventura is being built for residents 55 and older who want to stay focused on an active lifestyle while owning their home," said Hubbell spokeswoman Claire Brehmer. Condos will range from 1,200 to 1,800 square feet in 13 different floor plans. It has modern finishes such as quartz counter tops, underground heated parking, outdoor gardens, car wash bays, an exercise room and a woodworking area. Units will cost around $250,000 to $400,000.
