Journalist and author Alex Berenson, formerly a science writer for the New York Times and known for being one of the most vocal critics of official coronavirus policy, reports that the White House was privately pressuring Twitter in the months prior to his permanent ban from the platform, which was recently overturned after his lawsuit against the social media company was settled. According to internal discussions between Twitter employees held on Slack, a workplace discussion app, and published by Berenson in his newsletter, White House officials specifically asked Twitter why the skeptical writer had not been banned from the platform. Dems near congressional passage of climate, health package
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats pushed their flagship climate change and health care bill toward House passage Friday, placing President Joe Biden on the brink of a back-from-the-dead triumph on his leading domestic goals that the party hopes will energize voters going into November’s elections. The narrowly divided House was poised to approve the legislation, which is but a shadow of the larger, more ambitious plan to supercharge environment and social programs that Biden and his party envisioned early last year. Even so, Democrats were thirsty to declare victory on top-tier goals such as providing Congress’ largest ever investment in curbing carbon emissions, reining in pharmaceutical costs and taxing large companies and show they can wring accomplishments out of a frequently gridlocked Washington that disillusions many voters. House Democrats pass sweeping healthcare, tax and climate bill
WASHINGTON — House Democrats on Friday passed a sweeping healthcare, tax and climate change bill. Now they have to sell it. The vote was 220 to 207, with all Democrats voting in favor and all Republicans opposing it. With the midterm elections quickly approaching, congressional Democrats have had a series of legislative victories in recent weeks — expanding NATO, securing healthcare and benefits for veterans exposed to toxic burn pits, investing nearly $53 billion into the U.S. semiconductor industry and passing bipartisan gun safety legislation. That momentum has culminated in the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, an offshoot of the many versions of President Biden’s failed Build Back Better Act. The Inflation Reduction Act, which the Senate passed Sunday with Vice President Kamala Harris breaking a tie, now heads to President Biden’s desk for his signature. With Biden poised to sign the bill into law in the coming days, House Democrats say their focus should now … [Read more...] about House Democrats pass sweeping healthcare, tax and climate bill
