Pennsylvania court blocks governor’s bridge tolling plan
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A state court on Thursday permanently blocked Gov. Tom Wolf’s plan to toll as many as nine major bridges on interstates in Pennsylvania, siding with three Pittsburgh-area municipalities that argued that his administration had violated procedures in getting to the advanced stage of considering the idea. A panel of Commonwealth Court judges granted the municipalities' request to effectively declare the plan dead because Wolf's Department of Transportation had not followed the law. One key element on which the court agreed with the municipalities is the claim that PennDOT was required to propose specific bridges to toll when it asked the Public-Private Transportation Partnership Board in 2020 for permission to move forward with a bridge-tolling plan. It did not. As a result, parties potentially affected by a tolling project — such as a municipality — had no opportunity to meaningfully give input to the process before the board's decision, the court said. … [Read more...] about Pennsylvania court blocks governor’s bridge tolling plan

Stop posting about “camping,” Colorado abortion advocates say — and get involved these ways instead
Abortion advocates want Coloradans moved to action by the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn of Roe v. Wade to know there are many ways to help in the fight for women’s reproductive rights, but some options could do more harm than good. Employees with Cobalt, a Colorado-based nonprofit organization focused on bridging access to reproductive health care, advised on the best — as well as potentially harmful — ways people can get involved in fighting for safe access to abortions, which remain legal in Colorado after the legislature enshrined the right to an abortion in state law. When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on Friday, trigger laws in 13 states — Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Texas, Oklahoma and Wyoming — went into effect, criminalizing abortion in those states immediately or in the near future. Colorado is surrounded by states restricting or banning abortions, making it a popular … [Read more...] about Stop posting about “camping,” Colorado abortion advocates say — and get involved these ways instead
Denver International Airport prepares for big crowds over Fourth of July weekend
Heavy crowds are expected at Denver International Airport on Thursday, marking the start of a busy Fourth of July weekend — and the kick-off for the busiest months of summer travel. About 220,000 passengers are expected to pass through DIA during the day, with a similar number expected Friday. They are projected to be the busiest days of a six-day holiday travel period, with 1.2 million travelers projected by DIA through Tuesday. Monday is the July 4 holiday. DIA says crowds are expected to match or exceed passenger volumes during the last Fourth of July weekend before the pandemic, in 2019, when the holiday fell on a Thursday. That’s in line with an earlier DIA forecast that summer travel will beat 2019’s record levels — notwithstanding a higher risk this year of cancellations by major airlines as they grapple with short staffing. Cancellations have been much rarer at DIA this week than at some other major national and international hub airports, though 23% of … [Read more...] about Denver International Airport prepares for big crowds over Fourth of July weekend
