Civil rights attorney Lee Merritt arrested in Texas protest

March 27, 2023 by www.sfchronicle.com Leave a Comment

DALLAS (AP) — A prominent civil rights attorney was among a group of people arrested in a Dallas suburb during a demonstration in memory of a Black man who died in a struggle with guards at an area jail. McKinney police arrested lawyer Lee Merritt and two others on charges of obstructing a roadway during the Sunday protest over Marvin Scott III's 2021 death in the Collin County jail. Merritt, 40, was also charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon, police said. Merritt, who's forged a national profile representing the families of people killed by law enforcement officers, told The Associated Press that he was “unlawfully arrested” while he attended the protests as the Scott family's lawyer. The attorney said he had been legally carrying a firearm at the time of his arrest, which led to the weapons charge. Merritt was released from jail Monday. The Collin County district attorney's office did not respond to a phone message about whether prosecutors would pursue the charges. University’s Health Leadership Privately Discussed Ways To Keep ‘Equity’ Initiatives From Public

March 22, 2023 by dailycaller.com Leave a Comment

The University of North Carolina School of Medicine attempted to update its curriculum to adopt social justice advocacy requirements without alerting the public, according to documents obtained by National Association of Scholars (NAS) Senior Fellow and Director of University Policy John Sailer. The Department of Allied Health Sciences formed a task force to recommend policies it could implement to embed social justice in its curriculum, but administrators attempted to keep all information internal, according to emails obtained by Sailer. “The UNC Board of Governors likewise passed a prohibition against compelled speech, which will likely put an end to mandatory DEI statements — a groundbreaking policy. But if UNC is serious about supporting academic freedom, and pushing back against the ever-narrowing orthodoxy on campus, they need to know what they’re up against,” Sailer told the Daily Caller News Foundation. A University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine … [Read more...] about University’s Health Leadership Privately Discussed Ways To Keep ‘Equity’ Initiatives From Public

‘Indoctrinate Students’: State Lawmakers Are Pushing Back On The Diversity Initiative Takeover On College Campuses

March 27, 2023 by dailycaller.com Leave a Comment

States across the country are considering legislation that would ban Diversity, Equity and Inclusion  (DEI) initiatives on college campuses, according to a new tracker promoted by the Chronicle of Higher Education. State lawmakers should introduce bills to counter the growing DEI presence because “radical political activists now command so strong a position within universities,” David Randall, National Association of Scholars director of research, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “State legislators’ work is necessary, but all of us must work to free higher education from the pervasive tyranny of DEI bureaucracies,” he said. Several states are considering legislation that would stifle Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) efforts on college campuses across the country, according to a new tracker operated by The Chronicle of Higher Education. The slew of legislation largely tackles banning mandatory DEI training, DEI-centered offices or programs or using DEI … [Read more...] about ‘Indoctrinate Students’: State Lawmakers Are Pushing Back On The Diversity Initiative Takeover On College Campuses

Geraldine Ferraro Dies: Memories of Her 1984 Campaign

July 13, 2017 by www.thedailybeast.com Leave a Comment

America's first female VP candidate on a major party ticket died today at 75. Lynn Sherr, who traveled with Ferraro on her groundbreaking 1984 campaign, recalls the congresswoman's electrifying debut, the way she inspired women all over the country—and how she handled her loss with grace. Plus, Mark Katz remembers Geraldine Ferraro's great sense of humor . Geraldine Ferraro opened the door to her Washington congressional office, grabbed my hand, and pulled me to the mirror above her fireplace. "C'mere," she said in her brisk Queens cadence. "C'mere. I have to see what everyone's talking about." Photos: Geraldine Ferraro It was the summer of 1984, the first time I'd met her, and the two of us stood side by side gazing at each other's reflection. Everyone, it seems, was right. We did look alike, with our nearly identical short, thatched, and blond-streaked hair, our high cheekbones and strong chins. True, I was some four inches taller than the congresswoman, and she had a … [Read more...] about Geraldine Ferraro Dies: Memories of Her 1984 Campaign
