The continental United States in July set a record for overnight warmth, providing little relief from the day’s sizzling heat for people, animals, plants and the electric grid, meteorologists said. The average low temperature for the Lower 48 states in July was 63.6 degrees (17.6 Celsius), which beat the previous record set in 2011 by a few hundredths of a degree. The mark is not only the hottest nightly average for July, but for any month in 128 years of record keeping, said National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration climatologist Karin Gleason. July’s nighttime low was more than 3 degrees (5.4 Celsius) warmer than the 20th century average. Scientists have long talked about nighttime temperatures -- reflected in increasingly hotter minimum readings that usually occur after sunset and before sunrise -- being … [Read more...] about Hot nights: US in July sets new record for overnight warmth

Latvia, Estonia leave China-backed East Europe forum
BEIJING (AP) — Latvia and Estonia say they have left a Chinese-backed forum aimed at boosting relations with Eastern European countries, in what appears to be a new setback for China's increasingly assertive diplomacy. The move follows China’s boosting of its relations with Russia, whose invasion of Ukraine is seen as a possible first step in a series of moves against countries that were once part of the Soviet Union. China has refused to criticize Russia and has condemned punishing economic sanctions imposed on Moscow by the West. Weeks before the invasion, Chinese President and Communist Party leader Xi Jinping hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing and declared their bilateral relations had “no limits" in a joint statement. The move also comes after Beijing launched economic and diplomatic retaliation against another Baltic state, Lithuania, in retaliation for its expanded ties with the self-governing island democracy of Taiwan, which China claims as its own … [Read more...] about Latvia, Estonia leave China-backed East Europe forum
Liz Truss Vows to Combat Wokeism and Antisemitism in Deep State
The likely next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, has slammed the British deep state bureaucracy for being too “woke” and for being a breeding ground for antisemitism. Speaking from a synagogue in Manchester in the North of England on Friday, Conservative leadership frontrunner Liz Truss pledged to “change woke civil service culture that strays into antisemitism.” Laying out her plan to “protect British Jewry from creeping antisemitism and wokesim,” Truss said that she would review whether schools are doing enough to educate pupils and teachers about antisemitism, go after antisemitism within universities, and work towards a free trade deal between the United Kingdom and Israel. “Every organisation has its culture, but it’s not fixed, it can be changed,” Truss said. “That’s what ministerial leadership is about: it’s about making sure that the policies we represent, the values we stand for, are reflected in what we do.” In an interview … [Read more...] about Liz Truss Vows to Combat Wokeism and Antisemitism in Deep State
UK Charges ‘Jihadi Paul,’ Alleged Final Member Of Notorious ISIS ‘Beatles’
The United Kingdom levied terrorism charges against the alleged “Jihadi Paul,” a notorious Islamic State (IS) fighter who participated in gruesome acts of terrorism with a group of four British IS members collectively known as the “Beatles,” after the well-known British band. The U.K.’s Metropolitan Police arrested Aine Davis, 38, in Luton Airport Wednesday upon arrival from Turkey, where he has been held in prison since 2014 on suspicion of involvement with the Beatles, according to CNN. Davis, who took on the name Hamza after converting to Islam, was remanded in custody after declining to enter a plea at a hearing before the Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London Thursday. A spokesperson for the Crown Prosecution Service Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division said it had “authorized the Metropolitan Police to charge Aine Leslie Junior Davis for terrorism offenses in 2014, and after being deported to England by Turkish authorities,” CNN reported. Governments have … [Read more...] about UK Charges ‘Jihadi Paul,’ Alleged Final Member Of Notorious ISIS ‘Beatles’
