Trump impeachment proceedings

Trump still popular among supporters after second impeachment trial: poll

close Video Trump disputes election in TV calls Breaks his silence, praises Limbaugh. A new poll shows former President Trump is still popular among his supporters in the wake of the impeachment trial earlier this month that led to his second acquittal. A Suffolk University/ USA Today poll found that 46% of Trump supporters would abandon the Republican Party and join a Trump party should he decide to create one, versus 27% who would stay with the GOP. MCCONNELL SAYS HE WAS DEFENDING THE CONSTITUTION, NOT TRUMP, IN IMPEACHMENT ACQUITTAL VOTE Half of the individuals polled said the Republican Party should become "more loyal to Trump," even if it means losing support from establishment Republicans, versus 19% saying the party should become less loyal to Trump and more aligned with establishment Republicans. The survey of 1,000 Trump voters, identified from 2020 polls, was taken by landline and cellphone last Monday through Friday. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. Video Trump was acquitted by the Senate earlier this month after a weeklong trial, following the House of Representatives on Jan. 13 voting to impeach him on one article — inciting insurrection — following the Capitol riot on Jan. 6. Trump was the first president in U.S. history to be impeached twice and the first president out of office to go through an impeachment proceeding. MCCONNELL RIPS TRUMP, SAYS ACTIONS 'UNCONSCIONABLE' BUT TRIAL WAS UNCONSTITUTIONAL Trump was acquitted, with 57 senators voting for his conviction -- short of the required two-thirds majority -- and 43 voting against conviction. While popular with his supporters, Trump has had a falling out with some establishment Republicans. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell voted to acquit Trump but defended the move as one in defense of the U.S. Constitution — not in defense of Trump. Trump last week unloaded on McConnell. ...

Exclusive: After 2020 Gains, Kevin McCarthy Eyes House GOP Majority, Speaker’s Gavel in Midterms

House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy has a fresh spring in his step after the Republicans defied the odds and professional political prognosticators by picking up 15 seats in the 2020 congressional elections. McCarthy, who has his eyes on the majority in November 2022, approached the 2020 congressional elections differently than Republicans in recent history have traditionally targeted congressional electoral efforts, and his moves paid off—and not only infuriated but befuddled the beltway pundit class. For the first time since 1994, in 2020 no GOP incumbent running for reelection lost. Meanwhile, McCarthy blew away fundraising records previously set by former House Speaker Paul Ryan—astonishing since he did it from the minority. Usually, House political leaders do better raising money from the majority. That’s not to mention the most significant development which is a freshman class entering Congress in 2021 that represents perhaps the most diverse in party history with the most women to boot. “First of all, put it in perspective, this is the first time since 1994 that no Republican incumbent lost,” McCarthy told Breitbart News in an exclusive interview when asked how the GOP did it. “We won in 2010 and that didn’t happen. No Republican incumbent lost. It was about the quality of the candidates and the message. Remember, we ended up picking up four new seats in California. We defeated four Democrats [in California], Trump lost all four districts and three of them he lost by double digits. We won in Miami. We won in New York. The quality of the candidates, the contrast—remember what we did with the Commitment to America? Rebuild, restore, and renew versus their defund, dismantle, and destroy, which they were doing. It was a very clear message. But think of the candidates we had from Young Kim to Carlos Gimenez to Ashley Hinson to Michelle Fishbach to Nicole Malliotakis in New York. We just took it to them.” For the last three months, since the Nov. 3, 2020, ...

GOP courts Biden, who signals he might move without them

President Biden and Democrats are signaling they will move forward with a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill by using special budget rules to sidestep a GOP filibuster. A day after Biden held a White House meeting with 10 Republican senators who support moving a much smaller package, Biden called into a meeting of Senate Democrats and urged them to go big and move quickly. While going “big” doesn’t rule out any agreement between the White House and Republicans, it suggests Biden wants to move forward with a much larger package than even centrist Republicans say they could support despite the president’s statements that he also wants to unify Washington and work with Republicans. ADVERTISEMENT Biden met a group of 10 Republican senators — including one by conference call — at the White House Monday, leaving several of them with the impression that he might put the brakes on a Democratic effort to fast-track a partisan relief package in Congress in order to give more time for bipartisan negotiations. But on Tuesday, his message to Senate Democrats in a lunchtime conference call was clear: go big and move fast on a COVID-19 relief bill. “President Biden spoke about the need for Congress to respond boldly and quickly. He was very strong in emphasizing the need for a big, bold package. He said that he told Senate Republicans that the $600 billion that they proposed was way too small,” Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer Chuck Schumer Congress holds candlelight vigil for American lives lost to COVID-19 The Hill's 12:30 Report - Presented by Facebook - Lawmakers investigate Jan. 6 security failures Senate confirms Thomas-Greenfield as UN ambassador MORE (D-N.Y.) told reporters after the Democratic meeting.
