FILM REVIEW; Evanescent Trees and Sisters In an Enchanted 1970’s Suburb

Lux Lisbon, one of the five self-doomed sisters whose lissome dance toward extinction is the subject of Sofia Coppola's first movie (and of Jeffrey Eugenides's first novel, on which it is based), is first glimpsed in the act of finishing a red Popsicle. As played -- incarnated might be a better word -- by Kirsten Dunst, Lux is at once a blond icon of girlish suburban innocence and an emblem of womanly eroticism. Like Sue Lyon in Stanley Kubrick's ''Lolita,'' with her lollipop and her heart-shaped sunglasses, Ms. Dunst turns Lux's every glance and gesture into an ambiguous provocation. In Mr. Eugenides's book, and in the script Ms. Coppola has reverently carved from it, Lux and her sisters exist only insofar as they are the objects of masculine desire, which upon their deaths … [Read more...] about FILM REVIEW; Evanescent Trees and Sisters In an Enchanted 1970’s Suburb

About the Archive This is a digitized version of an article from The Times’s print archive, before the start of online publication in 1996. To preserve these articles as they originally appeared, The Times does not alter, edit or update them. Occasionally the digitization process introduces transcription errors or other problems; we are continuing to work to improve these archived versions. THERE comes a time when a satirical writer, if he's really out for blood, must stop clowning around and move in for the kill. That unmistakable moment of truth arrives about halfway through ''The Colored Museum,'' the wild new evening of black black humor at the Public Theater. In a sketch titled ''The Last Mama-on-the-Couch Play,'' the author, George C. Wolfe, says the unthinkable, … [Read more...] about STAGE: ‘COLORED MUSEUM,’ SATIRE BY GEORGE C. WOLFE

Republican boycott over Oregon’s Democratic-led bills enters 5th week

The longest-ever walkout in the Oregon Legislature completed its fourth week on Wednesday as the enforceability of a ballot measure that would disqualify the boycotters from immediate reelection appeared in doubt. By all appearances, Oregon’s 2023 legislative session has crashed on the rocks amid the GOP boycott of the Senate over an abortion and transgender care bill. Senate President Rob Wagner once again tried on Wednesday to convene the chamber, which last met on May 2. "We’ll give this another shot," the Democrat said. But a roll call again showed that nine Republicans and a member of the Independent Party of Oregon were absent without being excused, preventing a quorum and putting on ice votes on Democratic priority measures, including one on gun control. OREGON REPUBLICAN SENATORS VOW TO CONTINUE … [Read more...] about Republican boycott over Oregon’s Democratic-led bills enters 5th week

Weinstein Is Convicted. Where Does #MeToo Go From Here?

February 27, 2020 by www.nytimes.com Leave a Comment

Three days before Harvey Weinstein was convicted of rape , Michael R. Bloomberg agreed to release three women from nondisclosure agreements so they could publicly describe complaints against him. Hours after the Weinstein jury adjourned, celebrities and fans packed a memorial for Kobe Bryant as questions lingered about the impact a 2003 rape case would have on his legacy. The next day, a $500,000 deal to settle sexual harassment allegations against the opera superstar Plácido Domingo collapsed when details of an investigation into his behavior toward over two dozen women became public . Those developments are all signs of how potent — and unresolved — # MeToo continues to be. This week, the man who ignited the movement was found guilty in New York , a victory many victims once considered unattainable. Now, the figures driving #MeToo say they are feeling a surge in momentum, but are grappling with how they can move beyond individual allegations and toward a concrete set of … [Read more...] about Weinstein Is Convicted.
