Priest Center is being made available for workforce training, meetings, engagements and other events solely for the community, having already helped Dallas entrepreneurs like Monisha Clifton, who eventually launched her own baking and catering company while accessing Dallas College resources. Cornerstone Baptist Church is the start of many good memories for Clifton. The South Dallas church is where she expanded her love for baking into her own company — Moe’s Delights — a bakery business that she launched during the pandemic. “I purchased a home the month before the social distance mandate was ordered. As a way to get to know my neighbors, I baked and delivered pies using my mother’s recipe. China’s Market Rout Is a Double Threat
HONG KONG — For nearly three years, President Xi Jinping of China has crushed opposition by silencing and often locking up anyone who dares defy the government. But that aura of invincibility has been shaken by stock market speculators who have made a mockery of efforts to halt a steep slide in share prices. The losses — Chinese shares have shed more than a quarter of their value in three weeks — pose an added risk, and possibly greater danger, to a global economy grappling with Greece’s difficulties in repaying foreign loans and its possible exit from the euro. About $2.7 trillion in value has evaporated since the Chinese stock market peaked on June 12. That is six times Greece’s entire foreign debt, or 11 years of Greece’s economic output. Skeptical investors have so far shrugged off each step the government has taken to keep share prices aloft: an interest-rate cut, threats to punish rumormongers, allowing the national pension fund to buy stocks and even plans to investigate … [Read more...] about China’s Market Rout Is a Double Threat
Jimmy Kimmel on What He Remembers From the First Night of His Talk Show 20 Years Ago: ‘I Was Totally Unprepared’
Click here to read the full article. The odds that “ Jimmy Kimmel Live” would still be here, 20 years after its launch on Jan. 26, 2003, were astronomically low. The network hadn’t done a traditional late-night talk show since the short-lived “Into the Night With Rick Dees” (hosted, coincidentally, by another Los Angeles radio veteran) in 1991, and the time slot’s previous inhabitant, “Politically Incorrect,” had been canceled due to declining ratings — and controversy over 9/11-related comments host Bill Maher had made. Those early reviews were rough ( including Variety , which lamented that “ABC is stuck with a show designed by a network that’s not quite ready for cable”) and the show struggled in its early months to book guests. And soon, Kimmel’s biggest backer at the network, then-ABC chairman Lloyd Braun, was out the door. PORNOGRAPHY isn't just for dirty old men anymore. The movies that used to be shown in seedy Times Square theaters are now under bright lights at the Museum of Sex on Fifth Avenue. ''Auto Focus,'' Paul Schrader's biopic about the actor Bob Crane, who filmed his own sex life, is playing in a number of local movie houses. And Elaine May's forthcoming comedy, ''Adult Entertainment,'' which opens on Dec. 2 at the Variety Arts Theater, is about a group of actors who want to make a porn movie with class. ''People just take porn in stride these days,'' said Marc Spitz, a senior writer at Spin magazine and the author of his own porn script, which was turned into a play titled ''Shyness Is Nice'' and staged at Westbeth last year. ''There's nothing dangerous about sex anymore.'' The … [Read more...] about THEATER; Debbie’s Doing New York Now, But Rate Her PG
