Deputies found a stolen car in the parking lot of the Walmart on State Road 64 E. just after 4 p.m. When the driver, Christopher Darlington, saw deputies, he intentionally rammed a MCSO patrol vehicle with the stolen car, the agency said. He then drove over a shopping cart corral and headed west on SR 64. Oakland weighs phase-out of its eviction moratorium after three years
Oakland will consider winding down over the next year an eviction moratorium enacted during the COVID-19 pandemic — a key decision that comes two days after landlords stormed a City Council meeting demanding an end to the rule. Council President Nikki Fortunato Bas and Council Member Dan Kalb will introduce legislation Thursday that “phases out” the city’s eviction moratorium, which protected tenants from eviction during the crisis. Bas and Kalb have been working on the legislation for weeks, officials said. Currently, Oakland residents are prohibited from evicting tenants over COVID-related rent debt. Similar to other cities, Oakland passed its eviction moratorium in March 2020 to protect tenants from losing their homes if they couldn’t pay rent due to job losses or other economic hardship spurred by the pandemic. The ring was given to Bradenton native Richard Gullett — who took home the 1986 state championship title in the 157-pound weight class as a sophomore — by his personal wrestling coach, Ron Jones. While Jones coached at Sarasota High School, he also trained wrestlers from throughout Manatee County and the Sarasota area after school and during the offseason.
