GUILDERLAND, N.Y. — Standing outside the Guilderland Travel Plaza and waiving his right against self-incrimination, Ryan Lynch said what many drivers on the New York State Thruway have signaled for years: They can’t drive 65. “ I try and stay around 80,” said Mr. Lynch, 22, a student at Rochester Institute of Technology who was midway through a six-hour trek home to central Massachusetts on a recent afternoon. “People want to go where they’re going.” Mr. Lynch was just one of several motorists interviewed during a recent pit stop who said they liked the idea of a new state bill that would raise the speed limit on some of the state’s major highways to 70 miles per hour, a five m.p.h increase that would bring New York in line with many other states . 0 Crime & Safety A woman was killed after losing control of her car on Old Tampa Road and hitting a sign, 3 utility poles, Florida Highway Patrol said. Tiffany Razzano , Patch Staff Posted Reply MANATEE COUNTY, FL — A 47-year-old Parrish woman died after a single-vehicle crash on Old Tampa Road Sunday afternoon, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release. Just after 5 p.m., while heading west, she lost control of her car as she approached a left curve in the road just west of Chin Road, FHP. After veering off the road and into the grass shoulder, the front of her car hit a left curve sign and three wooden utility poles, the agency said. Her car overturned and came to a stop in the north grass shoulder. She was pronounced dead at the scene, FHP said. The crash remains under investigation. Maggie Fusek , Patch Staff Posted | Updated Reply LAMORINDA, CA — More than 5,000 PG&E customers were without power Tuesday evening in weather-related outages in Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda. The outages were north and south of Highway 24, with 1,767 customers impacted in Rheem Highlands, Hall Drive, Hidden Valley and the Tahos Area in an outage that started at 4:19 p.m. At 5 p.m., 2,363 customers lost power in Orinda north of SR-24, according to the PG&E outage website. An outage affecting 749 customers started at 4:37 p.m. in the Sunvalley Estates and Hidden Oaks area. Another 32 customers were without power starting at 4:11 p.m. north of Highway 24 in the Springhill Area. Tiffany Razzano , Patch Staff Posted Reply MANATEE COUNTY, FL — Days after Hurricane Ian hit Southwest Florida, there are still several significant road closures impacting travel through and within Manatee County on Saturday, according to a county news release. In Sarasota County, because of rising Myakka River waters, a section of Interstate 75 remains closed Saturday, impacting travel throughout the entire region, Manatee County said. The interstate is closed in both directions from mile market 193 at Jacaranda Boulevard to mile marker 179 at Toledo Blade Boulevard.
