Secular, but Feeling a Call to Divinity School
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — During orientation at Harvard Divinity School here in 2013, Angie Thurston wandered amid the tables set up by the various campus ministries. Catholic, Methodist, Muslim — they mostly served to reinforce the sense that Ms. Thurston did not fit into an organized religion. Here she was, starting her graduate studies in religion when she did not know the definition of liturgy, had never read the Bible and could not have identified a major theologian like Karl Barth, even if it would have won her a fortune on “Jeopardy!” Yet something in organized religion hinted at an answer to the atomized, unmoored life she led. “I didn’t feel unwelcome, but I did feel like it was a call to creativity,” Ms. Thurston, 30, recalled of her initiation. “I wanted to respond to what I saw as a crisis of isolation among young people.” She added, “I wanted to create a meaningful community that came together based on a shared goal rather than a shared religious creed.” From such … [Read more...] about Secular, but Feeling a Call to Divinity School
Deerfield Student Champions Mental Health Awareness For Kids
0 Community Corner Mason Tepper, 11, hopes to expand the mental health resource he started at school following last year's mass shooting in Highland Park. Eric DeGrechie , Patch Staff Posted Reply DEERFIELD, IL — Mason Tepper, like many other local children, is still haunted by the events of last July 4 when a mass shooting occurred at a parade in nearby Highland Park. "My classmates had to deal with friends, or friends of friends, who were shot," Tepper told Patch. "So when I was running for the executive committee at my school, my parents helped me come up with the idea to help the community and also see how I could help young athletes too since I love to play sports." Tepper said he shares sports teams with Highland Park and is very familiar with the community from living on the North Shore. When his father, Joshua, read him an article about mental health in collegiate sports in USA Lacrosse Magazine, the Wilmot … [Read more...] about Deerfield Student Champions Mental Health Awareness For Kids
School library book bans are seen as targeting LGBTQ content
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 11 DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Teri Patrick bristles at the idea she wants to ban books about LGBTQ issues in Iowa schools, arguing her only goal is ridding schools of sexually explicit material. Sara Hayden Parris says that whatever you want to call it, it's wrong for some parents to think a book shouldn't be readily available to any child if it isn’t right for their own child. The viewpoints of the two mothers from suburban Des Moines underscore a divide over LGBTQ content in books as Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds pushes an especially sweeping crackdown on content in Iowa school libraries. The bill she's backing could result in the removal of books from school libraries in all of the state's 327 districts if they're successfully challenged in any one of them. School boards and legislatures nationwide also are facing questions about books … [Read more...] about School library book bans are seen as targeting LGBTQ content

UK Govt Begs China to Ask Putin to ‘Cease Bombing Ukrainian Schools
The British government has pleaded with Communist dictator Xi Jinping to ask Vladimir Putin to stop “some” of the atrocities Russia is alleged to be inflicting on Ukraine on his trip to Moscow. Chinese Communist Party (CCP) supremo Xi Jinping is in the Russian capital for a high-level summit with President Vladimir Putin, which comes despite significant pressure from the West not to deepen ties with or engage in outright support for Russia as its “special military operation” in Ukraine wears on. “China has spoken previously about the importance of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity in Ukraine,” said the Official Spokesman for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in response to the trip, in comments quoted by The Telegraph . “We would like to see President Xi advocate for this point when he speaks to Putin. This war and its assault on Ukraine’s sovereignty could end today if Russia withdrew its troops from Ukraine,” they added, in what detractors of British diplomacy … [Read more...] about UK Govt Begs China to Ask Putin to ‘Cease Bombing Ukrainian Schools
