The initial sickout was held Feb. 28, when JCPS and seven other Kentucky school districts shut down as thousands of teachers descended on Frankfort to protest a bill to restructure the board for the Kentucky Teachers' Retirement System. This week, the state's largest school district closed again Wednesday after its teachers held another sickout despite the call from a statewide advocacy group to show up to work. U.S. markets trimmed 2018 losses in a Monday rally, but it was not enough to prevent the worst yearly decline for stocks since 2008. All three major indexes finished 2018 in the red during the finale of a tumultuous year. The Dow Jones industrial average closed the last day of 2018 at 23,327, up 265 points or 1.1 percent on the day. The Dow finished negative 5.97 percent for the year.The Standard & Poor’s 500 ended Monday at 2,506, up 21 points or .85 percent. It closed 2018 down 6.24 percent on the year. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite ended the year at 6,635, despite a 50-point gain, about .77 percent. The Nasdaq finished down 4.38 percent for the year. While Iowa has same-day voter registration, voters need to bring proof of their identity — such as an Iowa ID card, driver's license, or U.S. passport — and proof of Iowa residency — including a utility bill, paycheck or lease agreement — to register to vote Nov. 6 at their polling places. To pre-register to vote, fill out a voter registration form and return it to your county auditor's office. The deadline to request an absentee ballot must be received by your county auditor by 5 p.m. Saturday.
