Protect Your Children from Google: YouTube Marks Horror Videos as ‘For Kids,’ Won’t Let Creators Change Rating
Google’s hapless content moderation process for YouTube has begun flagging horror videos as “for kids,” cutting off creators from setting the rating of the videos as ages 18 and above. One horror video marked as appropriate for children is a fake government broadcast urging viewers to kill their families after a successful invasion of America. Ars Technica reports that Google’s content moderation process has made yet another error, this time flagging horror videos as “for kids” and preventing creators from changing the age range to 18 and up. One example comes from the horror series Local58TV , created by Kris Straub . Sundar Pichai CEO of Google ( Carsten Koall /Getty) The YouTuber checked his account over the weekend to find that his not-for-kids content was picked up by YouTube’s moderation AI and marked as for kids. congrats @youtube on the decision to auto-designate @LOCAL58TV ’s “show for children” as FOR KIDS despite my having set it as inappropriate … [Read more...] about Protect Your Children from Google: YouTube Marks Horror Videos as ‘For Kids,’ Won’t Let Creators Change Rating
Some 300 inmates on run after suspected Boko Haram raid on Nigeria prison
Abuja, Nigeria Around 300 inmates are on the run after a suspected raid by Islamist Boko Haram militants on a prison in Nigeria's capital Abuja on Tuesday night, an interior ministry official said. The raid, and a separate ambush on an advance convoy of Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari -- who was not present -- heading to his hometown in the northern state of Katsina, highlights Nigeria's going security challenges, especially in northern regions where armed insurgents and gangs are rife. Shuaib Belgore, permanent secretary at the interior ministry, told journalists outside the Abuja prison -- which has 900 inmates -- that a security officer was killed during the raid and three others were injured. He said the suspected Boko Haram attackers came for members who were held in the prison. A security officer with a sniffer dog stands at the medium-security prison on Wednesday. Opinion: The SEC alone can’t police billionaire CEOs like Elon Musk
Charles K. Whitehead is the Myron C. Taylor Alumni Professor of Business Law at Cornell University and the founding director of the Law, Technology & Entrepreneurship program at Cornell Tech. The opinions expressed in this commentary are his own. In the startup world, pushing regulatory limits to promote a new business is often seen as "entrepreneurial" or "disruptive." But breaking securities laws, as Elon Musk has allegedly done, is something different. It's well known that Musk has a strained history with the Securities and Exchange Commission. In 2018, the SEC alleged that Musk made "false and misleading" claims about taking Tesla private. Among other things, Musk agreed in a settlement with the SEC to pay a $20 million fine and step down as Tesla's chairman for three years. But the settlement does not seem to have deterred Musk from flouting the rules again. Earlier this year, Musk waited 21 days to publicly disclose he had acquired … [Read more...] about Opinion: The SEC alone can’t police billionaire CEOs like Elon Musk
Elon Musk: ‘I do not respect the SEC’
New York (CNN Business) Elon Musk settled securities fraud charges brought against him by the Securities and Exchange Commission earlier this year, but he is not done deriding the agency. "I want to be clear: I do not respect the SEC," he told Lesley Stahl during an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes," which aired Sunday. Musk said he is abiding by the terms of his settlement deal "because I respect the justice system." But he reiterated that there is no love lost between him and the SEC. Musk and Tesla, the electric car company he runs, reached separate $20 million deals with the agency in September to settle securities fraud charges lodged against Musk that stemmed from statements he made on Twitter. As part of the agreement, Tesla said it would firm up its oversight of Musk's social media use by pre-approving posts that may contain information that is "material" to Tesla's shareholders. But Musk, who has long been known for his liberal and … [Read more...] about Elon Musk: ‘I do not respect the SEC’
#GentleMinions trend of suited-up teens irks – and amuses – moviegoers
The latest social media trend has convinced young adults to dress in Rat Pack-esque suits and pose in formation with steeple hands, sometimes with a banana in their breast pockets. These throwback and somewhat bizarre scenes are part of #GentleMinions, a social media trend inspired by the film "Minions: The Rise of Gru," which has become an instant hit with young people worldwide. The animated comedy, a spinoff from the "Despicable Me" franchise, stars a gaggle of banana-yellow, gibberish-spouting rascals who assist an antihero - known for his steeple hand gestures - in his mischievous plans. The star actor, Steve Carell, reprises the titular role. The latest Minions installment has made more than $195 million at the global box office, according to ComScore. Universal Pictures, which distributes the film, attributes at least part of the financial success to its sharply dressed, young fan base: Over the weekend, it told suited moviegoers in a tweet with a heart-shaped emoji that … [Read more...] about #GentleMinions trend of suited-up teens irks – and amuses – moviegoers
