NBC News White House correspondent Monica Alba interrupted her live shot during MSNBC’s “José Díaz-Balart Report” to yell a question to President Joe Biden about former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, FL being raided by the FBI. Biden was signing the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act into law. Balart said, “Monica is at the White House. The president spoke about a lot of things. We have to remember he just got over COVID twice. I think that was evident today.” Alba said, “Yes, Jose, that’s right. You could hear the president there with a little bit of a loose cough. He said that was notable, something that we’ve seen the president at events before the double COVID. The reason he’s here today in the South Lawn is this $280 billion bipartisan bill, the investment in semiconductors and manufacturing. We’re going to try to ask him here to see if he potentially has any reaction to the search and seizure at Mar-a-Lago.” Alba turned away from the camera and … [Read more...] about Watch: NBC’s Alba Yells at Biden About Trump FBI Raid During Live Shot

‘Emily the Criminal’: It’s Really Fun to Watch Aubrey Plaza Breaking Bad
There was a liminal moment in history where the esoteric and the futuristic were at war with one another. I’m, of course, talking about when movie rental stores were on their way out and the Redbox machine in your local CVS or grocery store was the hottest spot in town on a Friday night. Too often when standing at that little red kiosk, we’d be saddled with a weak selection of two or three new releases—already taken by a more proactive customer—and an assortment of indie movies and mid-to-low-budget, direct-to-DVD alternatives. But, occasionally, taking a chance on the leftovers would prove fruitful, introducing you to an unexpectedly smart and exciting new favorite. If you’ve ever rummaged the far reaches of Redbox for residual entertainment, you’ll recognize Emily the Criminal . It’s a movie that you’ve seen before, a crime thriller cloaked in a slick disguise to make it a little more appealing than similar fare of scratched DVDs past. But there can be comfort in the … [Read more...] about ‘Emily the Criminal’: It’s Really Fun to Watch Aubrey Plaza Breaking Bad
Do Spiders Dream? New Study Could Help Scientists Better Understand Human Sleep
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — It’s a question keeping some researchers up at night. Do spiders dream when they sleep? New research recently released could help scientists better understand human sleep. You never know what this kind of strange research can lead to. The study focused on REM sleep when some humans and animals like dogs can twitch and move when dreams happen. READ MORE: Pennsylvania Rep. Scott Perry Says FBI Agents Seized His Cellphone They may be creepy, but spiders are more like humans than we realize. A new study from Germany says jumping spiders can doze in a dream-like state with rapid eye movement — REM sleep, that deepest stage that helps us feel rested and stay healthy. “We actually see twitching and uncontrolled leg movements, coupled with actual retinal movements,” said Daniela Roessler, a behavioral ecologist and the author of the report. Scientists say studying REM sleep in a wide range of species could lead to a better understanding of how it works and … [Read more...] about Do Spiders Dream? Inflation still sucks, but we’ll take whatever relief we can get
This story is part of CNN Business' Nightcap newsletter. To get it in your inbox, sign up for free, here. (CNN Business) It's August, which is an ideal time for a little late-summer economic vibe check. All of Wall Street is in the Hamptons or on Martha's Vineyard. Even the Fed is snoozing till September. So pour a cool glass of rosé, or whatever, and let's talk inflation. Where are we? How are things feeling? Well, it's taken approximately 8,000 years, but we're finally getting a liiitttle break from inflation. Here are a handful of bright spots for consumers: Gas prices in America have been falling for more than 50 consecutive days. The average cost of a gallon of gas, at a little over four bucks, is down almost a dollar since the June peak. Online retail prices fell 1% year-over-year in July, snapping nearly two years of persistent increases. The shift is even more pronounced on a month-over-month basis, in which online prices … [Read more...] about Inflation still sucks, but we’ll take whatever relief we can get
Alena Lodkina on ‘Petrol,’ Shooting Melbourne, Taking Audiences Down a Rabbit Hole
Click here to read the full article. Alena Lodkina’s first feature, “Strange Colours” (2017) took her deep into the Australian outback, to the rough-as-guts opal-mining town of Lightning Ridge, before bringing her to the Venice Film Festival, where the film premiered. It augured a distinctive new mood in Australian cinema – understated but keenly observed; a little sinister – as represented in recent editions of Rotterdam (David Easteal’s “The Plains”; James Vaughan’s “Friends & Strangers”) and Cannes (Thom Wright’s “The Stranger”). Her second feature, produced by Kate Laurie at Arenamedia and funded by Screen Australia , VicScreen, the Melbourne International Film Festival Premiere Fund, SBS, and Orange Entertainment, takes its bow at the 75th Locarno Film Festival . R.I.P. Blockbuster, You Frustratingly Magical Franchise, You
I was at the beach in Los Angeles this summer when I saw a unicorn. My friend and I were driving to dinner when I looked out the window and made the sighting, instinctively withdrawing my iPhone from my pocket to snap a picture with the speed of a pistol at a duel. It was, live and in living color, an actual brick and mortar Blockbuster store. That the video rental franchise had, over the course of the last decade, rapidly become extinct should come as no surprise. The rise of video on-demand, online streaming, and online rental rendered the mission of the retailer entirely useless, and the product it was peddling was always shamefully overpriced. Yet with the news Wednesday that Blockbuster is shuttering the last of its 300 U.S. stores , it’s an occasion to remember whatever that nostalgic, kind-of-magical thing was about the store that, when I saw it oh-so-briefly while cruising an L.A. boulevard, my heart fluttered as if I had seen a mystical creature. The thing is, … [Read more...] about R.I.P. Blockbuster, You Frustratingly Magical Franchise, You
