Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 2 A San Francisco school board member who was recalled from office in a landslide vote in February intends to run again for the position, one of nine candidates who have notified election officials of their intent to run for one of three seats in the November election. Gabriela López submitted her candidacy papers Thursday, according to the San Francisco Department of Elections, a day before the filing deadline. López was one of three school board members removed from the board in the recall. She was serving as board president at the time. The recall divided the city, with a grassroots effort of frustrated parents and community members pushing for the trustees’ removal over the slow reopening of schools during the pandemic and the board’s focus on controversial issues like renaming 44 school sites and ending the merit-based admission system at Lowell High School. 1 dead, 3 injured in San Francisco Bay Area shooting
One person was killed and three were injured by gunfire after a fight broke out in the parking lot of a gym in the East Bay early Thursday morning, officials aid. The shooting occurred just before 2 a.m. at a 24 Hour Fitness on Lone Tree Way in Brentwood, Lt. Walter O’Grodnick, a spokesperson for the Brentwood Police Department, told SFGATE. The argument started between several people on or near the gym's basketball court and moved outside onto the parking lot, where at least two people exchanged gunfire, O'Grodnick said. When police arrived on scene, they found that one man in his 20s had died from a gunshot wound, O'Grodnick said. Police later learned that three other people who were wounded in the shooting took themselves to local hospitals. "We have a suspect detained but have yet to determine their involvement," he said. O'Grodnick said that this was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public. "This was not an active shooter situation," he said. Francisco Lindor is one of the best players in the league again
As many continue fretting about Francisco Lindor’s batting average — which is also trending upward — the Mets’ indefatigable shortstop has shown up to the ballpark every single day and reclaimed his spot as one of the best all-around players in baseball. Lindor finally gets a break on Thursday, as a Mets’ off day is the only thing that can keep him off the field. Playing virtually without any rest, something that manager Buck Showalter is very fond of reminding people about, Lindor has posted the fourth-most Wins Above Replacement of any position player in the league. With offensive production that’s 32% better than the average player, clockwork defense at the diamond’s most important position and sneaky good base running, Lindor ranks behind the Cardinals’ corner infield duo of Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt for the crown of most valuable player in the league. It will almost certainly not lead to the actual award for Most Valuable Player, but Lindor deserves much more MVP … [Read more...] about Francisco Lindor is one of the best players in the league again

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 King tides hitting the Bay Area this week are expected to bring some of the highest tides of the year and to cause minor flooding in low-lying areas during nighttime hours. Frenemies reunited: Newsom names former LA mayor to new post
LOS ANGELES (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday appointed one-time nemesis and rival Antonio Villaraigosa, the former Los Angeles mayor, to a new post helping steer a gusher of federal dollars to road, port and transit projects. These days, the two are more friends than frenemies. Newsom announced that Villaraigosa would assume the post of “infrastructure czar,” an advisory position in which he would be pursuing billions of federal dollars and helping pair it with needs in the state. “Money is not our problem anymore,” the governor said, referring to a recently enacted $1 trillion federal infrastructure deal that promises to send billions for improvements to the nation's most populous state. California has to “go out and get it,” Newsom added, which is the charge Villaraigosa has in the new post. Villaraigosa said: “We got to build. We got to invest. And that’s what this is all about.” The appointment marks the latest chapter in a long-running relationship … [Read more...] about Frenemies reunited: Newsom names former LA mayor to new post
