Click here to read the full article. The odds that “ Jimmy Kimmel Live” would still be here, 20 years after its launch on Jan. 26, 2003, were astronomically low. The network hadn’t done a traditional late-night talk show since the short-lived “Into the Night With Rick Dees” (hosted, coincidentally, by another Los Angeles radio veteran) in 1991, and the time slot’s previous inhabitant, “Politically Incorrect,” had been canceled due to declining ratings — and controversy over 9/11-related comments host Bill Maher had made. Those early reviews were rough ( including Variety , which lamented that “ABC is stuck with a show designed by a network that’s not quite ready for cable”) and the show struggled in its early months to book guests. And soon, Kimmel’s biggest backer at the network, then-ABC chairman Lloyd Braun, was out the door. No moral victories for Nets without Kevin Durant: ‘We can’t snap our fingers and have him back’
PHILADELPHIA — At some point, Kevin Durant is going to walk through that door. It’s the silver lining in Brooklyn’s 137-133 loss to the 76ers on Wednesday, the team’s fifth loss in the seven games they’ve played since Durant went down with an MCL sprain in a Jan. 8 matchup against the Miami Heat. The Nets lost but came back from down 17 and had an opportunity to win in the fourth quarter. Against a fully healthy 76ers team with three stars in Joel Embiid, James Harden and Tyrese Maxey, the Nets nearly stole a victory. Without their best player. The Nets, however, have formed a united front against the idea of moral victories. They know things will look drastically different when Durant — who ranks 14th on the NBA’s all-time leading scorer’s list and averages a hair under 30 points per game — returns to the team, but his return date has yet to be determined . “I think we’re all saying that [it’ll look different when Durant returns], but at the end of day, that’s just … [Read more...] about No moral victories for Nets without Kevin Durant: ‘We can’t snap our fingers and have him back’
Why Skaters Love and Resist Skateboard Parks
On a recent Sunday afternoon in Midtown, Steve Rodriguez stood in the street, his hand raised in the winter sunlight, watching for traffic and security guards. His skateboard was tilted over on the sidewalk to make a small barrier — a visual cue for walkers to be cautious. He scanned the street, the sidewalk and a plaza up ahead, where a young man was waiting with a skateboard in an empty fountain. Mr. Rodriguez dropped his arm. “Go!” Shiki Rodriguez, 12, jerked into motion. He sprinted forward, jumped onto his board and raced across the fountain, then hit the upturned lip, launching himself into the air. He flew over the ground with his eyes on a bench, his anticipated landing spot. But he landed off balance, and the board shot out as he fell backward. Steve Rodriguez, the lookout and Shiki’s 51-year-old dad, jogged over, intercepting his son’s board. “That was a hard slam,” he said. “You OK?” “Yeah,” said Shiki, taking back his board. A well-dressed woman and her dog … [Read more...] about Why Skaters Love and Resist Skateboard Parks
NFL is looking into banning normal tackle that played huge role in 49ers-Cowboys
Jimmie Ward broke Tony Pollard's leg on Sunday, and now the NFL is reportedly considering legislating the type of tackle Ward made out of the game. The 49ers defensive back tackled Pollard from behind late in the second quarter of Sunday's divisional round game. Pollard suffered a fractured fibula and a high ankle sprain on the play; he'll need serious surgery. The part of the tackle that the league is eyeing, according to the Washington Post , is when Ward drops his hips to help him pull down Pollard and lands on the running back’s ankle. The league will look at the "mechanics of the tackle in Pollard's case," according to the Post. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes also suffered an ankle sprain on a similar tackle the day before. The report from the Post noted that a discussion does not necessarily guarantee a rule change, but there is precedent for outlawing the so-called "hip-drop" tackle onto someone’s legs. Australia’s National Rugby League banned the move in an … [Read more...] about NFL is looking into banning normal tackle that played huge role in 49ers-Cowboys
