The Knicks will celebrate the 70th anniversary of their franchise this season, and one of the players to be recognized will be Willis Reed, the center on their championship teams in 1970 and 1973. Reed spent his entire 10-year career with the Knicks and was a team captain. At 6 feet 9 inches, but solidly built, he could battle near the basket with giants like Wilt Chamberlain but also score from the perimeter with a smooth, left-handed jump shot. For his career, he averaged 18.7 points and 12.9 rebounds a game. He was the rookie of the year in 1965, appeared in seven All-Star Games, won the league’s Most Valuable Player Award in 1970 and was the N.B.A. finals’ most valuable player both times the Knicks won the title. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982. When he watches an N.B.A. game now, he said, his attention is not on the big men. “The league has some great guards in all sizes and shapes,” he said. “Of course, my favorite is Steph Curry. The Warriors are sending a loud message by signing Anthony Lamb
Editor’s note: This story contains descriptions of alleged sexual assault. The Golden State Warriors converted two-way forward Anthony Lamb to a fully guaranteed contract Thursday night, according to multiple reports, making him eligible for the stretch run and playoffs. As a business transaction, it’s a somewhat boring, possibly inconsequential move made on the margins by an underwhelming team desperately seeking answers. But to anyone paying attention, watching the Warriors protect and praise Lamb and now formally bestow a contract on him has been an uncomfortable situation all season. In case you’ve been hiding under Chase Center and exclusively listen to Bob Fitzgerald for your news: Lamb was accused of rape and other sexual misconduct by former University of Vermont swimmer Kendall Ware, who named Lamb in a lawsuit against the university in December. (When the lawsuit was filed, Lamb called the allegations “patently false,” saying, “Simply put, I have never committed … [Read more...] about The Warriors are sending a loud message by signing Anthony Lamb
Young, Hawks hand Warriors 10th straight road loss, 127-119
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 23 ATLANTA (AP) — Steve Kerr still believes in his defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors' postseason chances. The trick may be getting there. Trae Young's steal and layup with 45 seconds remaining protected Atlanta's slim lead and the Hawks took advantage of Golden State's continued poor perimeter defense on the road to beat the Warriors 127-119 on Friday night. Stephen Curry scored 31 points in Golden State's 10th consecutive road loss. The Warriors (36-35) hold the sixth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, only a half-game ahead of Minnesota. “I really think a lot of good is coming our way down the stretch, but we've got to get there,” Kerr said. The Hawks led 123-119 before Young's steal from Curry and layup stretched the advantage to … [Read more...] about Young, Hawks hand Warriors 10th straight road loss, 127-119

This rich beach town’s lawsuit against California is ‘bananas.’ But it does contain an ugly truth
“Batshit bananas.” Those were the precise words Yale Law School professor David Schleicher used to describe to me the lawsuit that Huntington Beach recently filed against the state of California. And, no, he wasn’t being hyperbolic. Unveiled just hours after California announced its own suit against the Orange County city for defying state housing laws, Huntington Beach’s lawsuit is truly mind-boggling both in content and form. It alleges, among other things, that California’s housing laws violate the city’s free speech and due process rights, interfere with interstate commerce, and run afoul of the U.S. and California Constitutions. It reads less like a legal document than a political manifesto and seems designed less to hold up in court than to rile up Huntington Beach voters who last fall elected a Republican City Council majority that campaigned on fighting a state requirement that the city plan for 13,368 new homes over the next eight years. In several particularly … [Read more...] about This rich beach town’s lawsuit against California is ‘bananas.’ But it does contain an ugly truth
