She put what belongings she still had — including her collection of what she refers to as her “ ’80s big-hair wigs” — into storage and filled a backpack with dog treats, toys and blankets for her 22-pound terrier, Brownie. She barely slept, bunking on top of picnic tables, where she folded up her blankets into a cocoon. Brownie would lie next to her, but the dog didn’t sleep much either. “If I dozed off, and someone walked within say 15 feet of me, she alerted me,” Niffenegger told me recently. “That dog was a trooper. I mean, she saved my life so many times.” The setbacks that led to Niffenegger’s life outside — a word she prefers to “homeless,” which she can’t bring herself to say — started in early 2019, when she lost her job at a call center. She tried to forestall financial … [Read more...] about When No Landlord Will Rent to You, Where Do You Go?

On Safari, on Foot
The air was redolent with the scent of death. “Don’t run!” our guide commanded. We were walking through the Zambian bush, the mopane trees alive with vultures waiting for a crack at the carrion — a massive Cape buffalo killed by lions who were feasting on their hapless prey in a nearby thicket. My husband, Roger, and son, Gabe, and I were heading single file toward the big cats. Leading the way was a National Parks scout armed with a rifle who was forging a roundabout trail across a gully. My anxiety mounted with every crunching leaf underfoot. We heard a slight “grrrr” and soon spied a lion’s silhouette flickering through the bushes. I thought grimly about being dead meat. Then the wind shifted and the mighty beasts, picking up the scent of the ultimate predator — humans — fled into the brush. We had landed several days earlier on a dirt airstrip in one of the most remote and least-touristed parks in Africa — North Luangwa National Park in Zambia — the tiny Cessna … [Read more...] about On Safari, on Foot

Jesse Eisenberg: By the Book
The actor and author, most recently, of the story collection “Bream Gives Me Hiccups” says Uta Hagen offers some excellent stage advice: “If you have to act stoned, imagine a helium balloon inflating inside your skull.” What books are currently on your night stand? “Ilustrado,” by Miguel Syjuco, was on my night stand, but I accidentally left it on an airplane yesterday. So it is likely on someone else’s night stand, probably someone who works for Delta. Who is your favorite novelist of all time? I’ve always loved Philip Roth’s fiction, but my favorite book is “Patrimony,” Roth’s nonfiction account of the last years of his father’s life. Who’s your favorite fictional hero or heroine? Three of my favorite books focus on characters who have come to the States under difficult circumstances: the Sudanese refugee of Dave Eggers’s “What Is the What”; Bosnian refugee Jozef Pronek in Aleksandar Hemon’s “Nowhere Man”; and the Dominican family in Junot Díaz’s “The Brief … [Read more...] about Jesse Eisenberg: By the Book

Friday 1. Fresh Off the Boat | 3 p.m. Of Lima’s 16,000 cevicherias, Hijo de Olaya is one of the smallest, and tastiest. Since it opened in October, this hole-in-the-wall has become popular among discerning Limeños , thanks to a simple formula: fast service, a small menu and fresh seafood, purchased daily at the busy Villa María del Triunfo fish market. Try the classic Olaya ceviche (24 soles, or $7.95, at 3 soles to the dollar), made with the day’s catch, ultra-zesty limes from the northern Piura Province, rocoto chilies, red onions, deep-fried corn kernels and seaweed. It comes with a chilcano de pescado, a light fish broth. 2. Crafts and Promenades | 4 p.m. Explore the streets of Barranco, an artsy neighborhood that was once a seaside resort for Lima’s upper class. Some of those century-old, Republican-style residences still stand; one of them houses a gift shop called Las Pallas, owned by a Welsh expat who has become an expert in Peruvian folk art.
