Brooklyn-Queens Streetcar, New Solar Panels Among De Blasio’s Plans In State Of The City Address
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — A new effort to keep the city’s neighborhoods clean, more solar panels on city-owned buildings, and a new streetcar service along the East River waterfront in Brooklyn and Queens were among the efforts Mayor Bill de Blasio announced in his State of the City address Thursday night. The efforts were part of a theme of bringing development and equal services to all city neighborhoods. The new streetcar service – called the Brooklyn-Queens Connector, or BQX for short – will run from Astoria to Sunset Park and will have the potential to generate $25 billion in economic impact for the city, Mayor de Blasio said. “New Yorkers will be able to travel up and down a 16-mile route that links a dozen waterfront neighborhoods,” he said. “The BQX has the potential to change the lives of hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers.” The total length would be approximately 16 miles along the East River waterfront that stretches between the two boroughs, primarily in a dedicated lane the city says would avoid conflict with general traffic. Officials estimate the route would shave about 18 minutes off a commuter’s typical weekday trip compared to current transit options. Neighborhoods like DUMBO have been booming with development, but public transportation development has not caught up. The streetcar fare would be a single-ride MetroCard. “This is about equity and innovation,” de Blasio said in a statement. “We are mapping brand new transit that will knit neighborhoods together and open up real opportunities for our people.” The streetcar line is estimated to cost $2.5 billion, less than a new subway line. The new streetcar is still several years down the road. There will ...

Bay Area CVS Pharmacies Begin Program Offering Free COVID Vaccines
PLEASANTON (KPIX 5) — In another advance in the effort to ramp up the COVID vaccine rollout in California, CVS pharmacies on Thursday began scheduling online appointments to give out free doses. According to what KPIX 5 heard from one Bay Area resident, slots were filling up quickly. The vaccine coming to CVS pharmacies is a fraction of what the state normally gets in a week. Bay Area COVID-19 Vaccine Resources Page “We are we are about to receive 10% of another 1 million dose allocation,” Governor Gavcin Newsom said Wednesday. “And that’s directly to pharmacies here in the state of California.” So the CVS allotment on top of the over one million doses California receives each week, but it’s divided up among many pharmacies. “I found a city near me,” Bay Point resident Cathie Mojica told KPIX during an interview Thursday. “I’ve been on their website trying to get to the appointment, but no luck.” And Mojica didn’t just try for a few minutes. “About an hour and a half,” she said with a laugh. Mojica gave it as much time as she could, but she never got through to the page that would have allowed her to book an appointment with CVS. Had she managed to get to that webpage, it would have been much like the state’s website, basically asking for her vaccine eligibility. By late afternoon Thursday, the CVS website listing cities with participating pharmacies was largely listed as “fully booked.” “I’ll think I’ll wait till the 15th, when my health care plan says they’ll call,” Mojica said as far as her next steps. “Give them a couple days, and see what happens.” Patients getting the vaccine through CVS need to register in advance at CVS.com or through the CVS Pharmacy app. The website provides a full listing of cities where the vaccine is available. People without online access can contact CVS customer service at (800) 746-7287. Walk-in vaccinations without an appointment will not be provided. Select Walgreens stores in Contra Costa ...
ADORABLE: Super Bowl LV As Explained By A 5-Year-Old Vacationing In Tampa Bay Area
TAMPA, Fla. (CW44 News At 10) – Fans across Tampa Bay continued celebrations well past the stunning win over the Kansas City Chiefs. CW44 caught up with one little football fan to get her take on Super Bowl LV. Like most 5-year-old’s, Isabela’s vacations start with sun, sand and water. However this vacation added a bit of a celebratory tone after the Bay Area erupted with football festivities over the weekend. “We were watching [The] Cowboys,” said Isabela by mistake after assuming her family had watched the Cowboys win the Super Bowl. Her family, Cowboys fans, laughed and corrected her for the camera. “We were watching football,” she responded. And this time, in front of the big screen for the big game. “When we were watching football, which there’s a football right here in my hands, well, everybody was wearing their football jerseys and, also, me and grandma were matching,” said Isabela. Plus, Isabela says she prefers it that way. “I am sitting on a chair with a football and some nice warm sand,” she said. “And I also have my sister, Leyla, right behind me.” She even took the opportunity to learn about the sport as the two teams battled it out at Raymond James Stadium Sunday night in front of millions of fans across the country. “So, the football screen has a football and they usually pick it up and then they throw it to another person just like this.
