Another powerful Pacific storm knocks on California’s door
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A powerful weather system originating in the Gulf of Alaska pushed into Northern California on Tuesday, bringing more wind, rain and snow to a state battered by months of storms. Forecasters warned of heavy snow in the coastal mountains and the Sierra Nevada, where accumulations of up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) were possible. An avalanche warning was issued for the greater Lake Tahoe area. The National Weather Service said the storm was expected to pull a plume of Pacific moisture into California as it tracked south, but the rainfall was not expected to be as intense as the atmospheric rivers that impacted the state in recent weeks. After a dozen previous atmospheric rivers and blizzards fueled by arctic air, the water content of California's Sierra Nevada snowpack is more than double normal overall, and nearly triple in the southern Sierra. ‘Nature gave us a lifeline:’ Southern California refills largest reservoir after wet winter
LOS ANGELES — Following a series of winter storms that eased drought conditions across the state, Southern Californians celebrated a sight nobody has seen for several punishing years: water rushing into Diamond Valley Lake. The massive reservoir — the largest in Southern California — was considerably drained during the state's driest three years on record , with nearly half of the lake's supply used to bolster minuscule allocations from state water providers. But an extraordinarily wet winter allowed officials from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to turn on the taps in Hemet once again. Water transported from Northern California roared out of huge concrete valves Monday and into the blue lake at 600 cubic feet per second — marking an incredible turnaround for a region that only months ago had barely enough supplies to meet the health and safety needs of 6 million people. "Nature gave us a lifeline in the face of climate whiplash," said Adel … [Read more...] about ‘Nature gave us a lifeline:’ Southern California refills largest reservoir after wet winter

When to expect the heaviest rain in the Bay Area on Tuesday
