BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Sen. Shirley Nathan-Pulliam, a state senator from Baltimore, has retired, citing health concerns after multiple back surgeries. Nathan-Pulliam cited health issues in a letter announcing her retirement, effective Sunday. The Democratic senator wrote that she has had three spine surgeries in recent years, including one Sept. 30. “I do this with a heavy heart. As many may know, I have had three spine surgeries in recent years, the last one on September 30. However, in my desire to serve my constituents, I remained in office, including accepting a leadership position as Vice Chair on the Education, Health, and Environmental Affairs Committee.” Sen. BALTIMORE, MD — The first Caribbean-born person to serve in the Maryland General Assembly has retired, opening a seat in the state senate for a Democrat to represent parts of Baltimore City and Baltimore County. Senator Shirley Nathan-Pulliam announced Sunday she was stepping down, citing health issues.Now 80, she was born in Jamaica, became a naturalized American citizen, is a registered nurse and has been a voice for health care equity in Maryland and nationwide. She sponsored the Patient's Bill of Rights, which took effect Oct. 1 and requires that hospitals communicate rights to all patients, including access to a translator, interpreter or other assistance. SACRAMENTO — Californians would be protected against massive rent increases and unfair evictions under an agreement announced Friday evening by Gov. Gavin Newsom. Tenant advocates and landlords have been at odds all year over anti-rent-gouging legislation that supporters said was necessary to keep people in their homes as living costs soar across California and that groups representing apartment owners and developers argued would discourage new construction. But the groups agreed to a deal that could clear a path for AB1482, a bill from Assemblyman David Chiu, D-San Francisco, that has struggled to find favor in the Legislature amid intense industry opposition.
