Stacey Abrams on MLB All-Star Game Boycott of Atlanta: ‘One Day of Games Is Not Worth Losing Our Democracy’
Leftwing activist Stacey Abrams took part in a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Monday where she discussed Major League Baseball’s (MLB) decision to withdraw its All-Star Game out of Georgia over a new election integrity law. In her remarks to members of the committee, Abrams attempted to distance herself from boycotts of the Peach State while eventually admitting that she supports “anyone who will try to stop this type of bad behavior,” referring to the Georgia law. “I acknowledge that boycotts work because as the progeny of those who used boycotts to gain access to the very rights we are fighting to defend. I recognize the utility of boycotts,” Abrams told Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR). “However, I took a great deal of effort to explain why I do not think a boycott in Georgia at this time is the appropriate remedy.” “I would say that my conversations with Major League Baseball were very clear about the fact that I did not think a boycott was necessary,” Abrams continued. “I was very intentional about my language. I continue to be intentional about my language, and while I am not the commissioner of baseball, I am not the head of a corporation, I am a Georgia citizen.” “I have every right and responsibility to speak out against laws that will have an effect on my community,” Abrams added. Despite her conversations with MLB being “very clear” that she did not believe a boycott was “necessary,” Abrams says she will “support anyone” who is willing to boycott Georgia because “one day of games is not worth losing our democracy.” “While I certainly regret the decision that MLB made to remove their game from Cobb County, and the economic effect that it will have on Georgians at large, I support anyone who will try to stop this type of bad behavior, this type of racial animus, this type of voter suppression from happening in Georgia or elsewhere in the country because, to me, one day of games is not worth losing our democracy,” Abrams said. "I think in order for us to have a chance we just have to approach every game as a must win, and I think these last two we’ve fortunately been on the right end of things but there’s going to still be work to do and improvement to be made in order for us to make a real push." CORONABUCKS: Now UK ‘Conservatives’ Want to Give All Young People £500
Two groups of liberal-progressive Tories are pressuring Boris Johnson to “follow President Biden’s lead” and give all young people £500 in coronavirus recovery funds, which would cost the taxpayer an estimated £2.8 billion. Last month, the U.S. Congress passed the Democrats’ $1.9 trillion coronavirus stimulus package, which contains the third round of $1,400 stimulus cheques. The One Nation Caucus and the Tory Reform Group have urged a similar “Covid relief payment” to young adults, calling them one of those “worse hit financially by the pandemic”. “The government should consider following President Biden’s lead and issue Covid relief payments for those worse [sic] affected by the pandemic. A £500 stimulus for every 18-24 year old in the UK, one of the age groups worst affected, would cost around £2.8 billion,” the groups suggested in the report published on Monday. If the government adopts the proposals, it would add to Britain’s already-spiralling debt. The UK’s debt broke the £2 trillion mark for the first time in August, with the country’s debt worth more than its GDP, at 100.5 per cent, for the first time since 1961. The Institute for Fiscal Studies warned months later that the government’s spending spree during the pandemic, including tens of billions in the furlough scheme, could result in massive tax hikes in the future. Government borrowing between April and December 2020 was £271 billion, boosted by the near-recording-breaking £34 billion in December alone. February saw the burden on the taxpayer hit a 70-year high. While in March, Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak said that the cost of coronavirus support for business over two years will have hit £407 billion, funded by £355 billion in borrowing, admitting that years of taxes are on the way to pay for it. British Debt Breaks £2 Trillion Mark for First Time Amid Pandemic
LONDON (AP) — Britain’s government debt has breached the 2 trillion-pound ($2.6 trillion) mark for the first time after heavy borrowing to support the economy during the coronavirus pandemic. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said Friday that the government borrowed a further 26.7 billion pounds in July, the fourth-highest amount of any month since records began in 1993. That pushed up debt to 2.004 trillion pounds. The increase also means that the country’s debt is now higher than the value of its economic output. The UK’s debt is worth 100.5 per cent of its annual GDP, the first time it has gone beyond 100 per cent since 1961. The deterioration in the public finances is due to the massive support schemes the government has put in place over the past few months to cope with the economic shock of the pandemic, which has already seen the British economy shrink by around a fifth. The government has cut an array of taxes and spent heavily, notably on a widely used salary support scheme. “This crisis has put the public finances under significant strain as we have seen a hit to our economy and taken action to support millions of jobs, businesses and livelihoods,” Treasury chief Rishi Sunak said. “Without that support things would have been far worse.” Follow Breitbart London on Facebook: Breitbart London ...
