Punk is something you can study in school these days. Students across the world earn class credit with essays examining the movement and its legacy. My niece learned about punk in the British equivalent of ninth grade. And I teach punk-related topics like DIY at California Institute of the Arts. So when I watched FX’s “Pistol,” Danny Boyle’s new limited series about the Sex Pistols , I couldn’t help looking for “teachable moments” to bring up in class next year. “Pistol” is essentially a period costume drama based on “Lonely Boy: Tales from a Sex Pistol,” a memoir by the guitarist Steve Jones , set in 1970s London. Unlike a documentary, a drama must carefully ration its expository moments, avoid anything that feels like a lecture. But if Boyle and the show’s creator, Craig Pearce, wanted to recreate the historical moment rather than just serve up a cosplay commemoration, they needed to convey the sociopolitical context that fired punk’s ire. Here’s where “Pistol” fell short: … [Read more...] about How a TV Series Undersells the Danger of the Sex Pistols

‘Ms. Marvel’ Proves That Marvel’s TV Shows Are Now Way Better Than Its Movies
The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) TV shows are more enjoyable than their recent movies. The sentence is blasphemous to some. However, there’s a possibility you’re nodding your head in agreement about this statement. Take the recent premiere of Disney+’s Ms. Marvel as an example. If it were a summer movie blockbuster, the kind Marvel typically makes , we would’ve been introduced to Kamala Khan 20 minutes into the film—long after the movie’s villain was introduced. Audiences would then be given just the next 20 minutes or so to understand Kamala through a quick examination of her personality and those of her family members. Instead of the revised origin story used in the TV show, which focuses on Pakistani legends, the movie version of Kamala would get a similar treatment as her comic book counterpart, who gains her inherent Inhuman abilities from the release of the Terrigen Mists. Most likely, this would connect to an upcoming Inhumans film because cross-promotion … [Read more...] about ‘Ms. Marvel’ Proves That Marvel’s TV Shows Are Now Way Better Than Its Movies

Disney Animated Children’s Series ‘Baymax’ Features Transgender ‘Man’ Who Menstruates
In Disney’s latest effort to smuggle transgender ideology into its entertainment for kids, the new animated Disney+ series Baymax features a transgender “man” who menstruates and gives advice on which maxi pad to buy — “the one with wings.” Baymax , which began streaming Wednesday on Disney+, follows the adventures of the balloon-like robot from the 2014 movie Big Hero 6 who is on a mission to serve as good samaritan to the residents of the fictional city San Fransokyo. The transgender character appears in episode three titled “Sofia,” in which Baymax assists a 12-year-old girl who experiences her first period. When a mortified Sofia barricades herself in a gender-neutral restroom at school, Baymax offers to buy her “menstrual hygiene materials.” At the store, Baymax is bombarded by suggestions from helpful shoppers, including a transgender character who is wearing a transgender-flag shirt. “I always get the one wings,” the trans “man” tells Baymax.
