It's a big reason leaders from the world's most powerful democracies descended on Hiroshima for this weekend's Group of Seven summit: Part commemoration, part effort to confront the continuing consequences of the moment a U.S. B-29 Superfortress released what the Americans named “Little Boy” over the city in the first wartime use of a nuclear bomb. It also presents Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, the driving force behind Hiroshima's selection for the G7 venue, with a unique dilemma. On the one hand, he is keen to promote the vision of a world without nuclear weapons that has long been a cornerstone of his political rhetoric. On the other, he is mindful of the widespread domestic worry over aggression by nuclear-armed neighbors. Kishida's difficult … [Read more...] about Analysis: Japanese PM faces dilemma at G7 as he balances anti-nuke goals with reality of threats

The Evidence for Therapy
Millions of Americans go to talk therapy. But does it work? It’s a surprisingly difficult question to answer. Talk therapy does produce great benefits for some people, but not for everyone, so it might not work for you, my colleague Susan Dominus wrote for The New York Times Magazine’s therapy issue , published this week. Researchers were able to reach that conclusion only relatively recently. Since the days of Sigmund Freud, the field of psychotherapy has been resistant, even hostile, to evaluating its methods through empirical studies. “At my graduation from psychoanalytic training, a supervising analyst said to me, ‘Your analysis will cure you of the need to do research,’” Andrew Gerber, the president of a psychiatric treatment center in Connecticut, told The Times. That resistance has waned in the past few decades, leading to hundreds of clinical trials. The results have been mixed. Some studies have found that therapy has a higher chance of helping than not. Other research … [Read more...] about The Evidence for Therapy
Park Geun-hye, South Korea’s Ousted Leader, Is Arrested and Jailed to Await Trial
SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea’s recently impeached president, Park Geun-hye, was arrested on Friday, becoming the first South Korean leader to be put behind bars since the mid 1990s, when two former military dictators were imprisoned on corruption and mutiny charges. Ms. Park’s dramatic downfall capped months of turmoil and intrigue, as huge crowds took to the streets to protest a sprawling corruption scandal that shook the interlocking worlds of government and business — including the leadership of Samsung , the nation’s largest conglomerate. A judge at the Seoul Central District Court issued the warrant early Friday morning, warning that if Ms. Park were not taken into custody quickly she might “destroy evidence.” The charges against her include bribery, extortion and abuse of power. In December, the National Assembly voted overwhelmingly to impeach Ms. Park, and she was formally removed from office on March 10. Her removal rattled the delicate balance of … [Read more...] about Park Geun-hye, South Korea’s Ousted Leader, Is Arrested and Jailed to Await Trial
In Suicide Note, South Korea Hacking Expert Denies Domestic Spying
SEOUL, South Korea — A hacking specialist at South Korea’s National Intelligence Service who was found dead left a suicide note denying that his team spied on South Korean citizens’ cellphone or other online communications, the police said on Sunday. The 45-year-old agent, who was identified only by his last name, Lim, was found dead in his car near Seoul on Saturday in what appeared to have been a suicide. His death came as the political opposition demanded an investigation into suspicions that the spy agency had been intercepting the cellphone and computer communications of South Korean citizens, including government critics, using software it purchased from the Italian company Hacking Team. Hacking Team was itself hacked, with large amounts of emails and other internal company data leaked online early this month. The data showed that one of the company’s clients was “South Korean Army Unit 5163,” which is widely believed here to be one of the cover addresses for the National … [Read more...] about In Suicide Note, South Korea Hacking Expert Denies Domestic Spying
Your Tuesday Briefing: Bakhmut in Ruins
With Bakhmut in ruins, Ukraine shifts focus Ukraine has tacitly acknowledged that Russia has seized Bakhmut: A Ukrainian official said today that Russian forces are engaged in “ mopping up ” operations to clear the remaining Ukrainian soldiers in the city — even as Kyiv seeks to shift the focus from the apparent loss to the battle for the city’s outskirts. The recent comments signaled a shift in how Ukraine is portraying the war’s deadliest campaign. For months, even as its hold on Bakhmut shrank to a few blocks, Ukraine would emphasize fierce fighting to keep the Russians from seizing the city. Officials now appear to be acknowledging that their focus is changing from defending Bakhmut to making it difficult for Russians to hold it . But Bakhmut itself is destroyed. Drone footage captured by The Times shows the once-peaceful city, known for its salt mines and sparkling wine , reduced to ashes. “By the time Russia declared victory over the ruins, it was clear the city … [Read more...] about Your Tuesday Briefing: Bakhmut in Ruins
