Senate approves sweeping coronavirus measure in partisan vote
The Senate on Saturday approved a sweeping coronavirus relief bill on a strictly party-line vote after a marathon session, giving Democrats their first legislative victory since reclaiming the majority. The Senate was in session for more than 24 hours, including all night Friday and well into Saturday, ahead of the final vote as Democrats fended off attempts by GOP senators to make changes to the legislation, which now has to go back to the House before it can be sent to President Biden ’s desk. The hours-long debate wasn’t without a significant injection of chaos as Democrats tried to navigate their first big legislative battle with a narrow 50-50 majority that required all Democrats to stick together in order to pass the bill. Democrats started their first amendment vote at 11:03 a.m. and held it open for nearly 12 hours as they tried to negotiate a deal on the unemployment language. Kiszla: Have woebegone Broncos made same mistake as Rockies and adopted “Don’t Worry Be Happy” as their theme song?
The Broncos might be the greatest 5-11 team in the history of the NFL, by the way new general manager George Paton gushes about players that finished dead last in the AFC West. Don’t know if Paton is a worthy championship architect, but he certainly a great big huggy bear. Have the Broncos duped Paton into believing all they need is a healthy dose of good luck and competent quarterback play to get back in the playoff conversation? Paton sounded Thursday as if he’s prepared to wrap his loving arms around quarterback Drew Lock. Rather than putting the underperforming Broncos on notice, Paton expressed the Pollyannish desire to bring everybody from linebacker Von Miller to Miles the Mascot back in the fold for 2021. After doing a deep dive on Lock’s videotape, Paton declared the young quarterback is talented but inconsistent. Well, duh. “I’ve spoken with Drew. I see him every day. He’s here early and he’s working. He really wants to be great,” Paton said. “We’re always going to try and bring in competition to every position, the quarterback as well. I like the trek that Drew is on.” Maybe Paton finished his film study wondering how Denver lost 11 games last season, because he went out of his way to compliment safety Justin Simmons, defensive lineman Shelby Harris, safety Kareem Jackson, running back Phillip Lindsay and all the players who might wonder how much the new boss loves them at a time when there’s a measure of contract uncertainty for all of them. While I hate to be contrarian, isn’t that a lot of unrequited love for a team that hasn’t made the playoffs in five years? Let’s hope Paton was merely trying to be diplomatic while keeping his true feelings to himself. Or perhaps coach Vic Fangio and holdovers from the previous regime have sold Paton on the idea everything will be peachy for the Broncos once the dark clouds of the pandemic disappear, replaced by the smiling face of No. 1 receiver Courtland Sutton, fully recovered from a knee injury. ...
