U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont has broken a hip in a fall at his home and was to undergo surgery to repair it, his office said Thursday. The 82-year-old Democrat fell Wednesday night in McLean, Virginia, the statement said. Doctors determined the best course of action would be to have surgery to repair the hip as soon as possible. Leahy was born blind in one eye. “The senator has had a lifelong struggle with reduced depth perception,” the statement said. “He has taken some remarkable dingers over the years, but this one finally caught up with him.” Leahy was “expected to make a full recovery and begin a healthy course of physical therapy immediately.” Leahy is the longest-serving sitting senator. He announced in November that he will not seek reelection this fall. By the time his term expires in January 2023, he will have served for 48 years in the Senate. Leahy was taken to the hospital in January 2021, hours after he had begun presiding over the second impeachment … [Read more...] about Vermont US Sen. Patrick Leahy breaks hip, to have surgery

Who Decides If We’re In A Recession? 8 Economists You’ve Likely Never Heard Of
(CNN) — Prominent Wall Street economists like Mark Zandi, investing luminaries like ARK Invest’s Cathie Wood and executives like JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon can make recession predictions until they’re blue in the face , but their guidance will remain just that — an economic forecast. That’s because, in the United States, the economy isn’t broadly and officially considered to be in a recession until a relatively unknown group of eight economists says so. Marco Rubio and his ‘Twelve Disciples’
Wow. Just. Wow. The St. Pete Times Adam Smith interviewed former Marco Rubio chief of staff Richard Corcoran, and things get weird. There were a couple jarring moments in our interview, though. Like when Corcoran tried to explain why thousands of dollars for the Melhanna plantation, where Rubio had a family reunion, were on Corcoran’s GOP credit card. Corcoran recounted that he and Rubio had planned a dinner for Rubio’s top lieutenants at Melhanna, though it was canceled at the last minute. Excerpts from our conversation. Corcoran: On the last night (of the organizational session) we were going to take the 12 disciples out to a dinner, with their spouses… Q: That’s what you called them? Corcoran: “Yeah. We did. We called them the 12 disciples.” Q: God almighty Corcoran: It wasn’t because….That sounded bad. Q: It does sound bad. These are the 12 disciples of Marco Rubio. So Marco Rubio then is Jesus? Corcoran: Come on…Ralph Arza came up with that. He’s an old coach. … [Read more...] about Marco Rubio and his ‘Twelve Disciples’
Dictator’s son Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is sworn in as Philippine president
MANILA, Philippines — Ferdinand Marcos Jr. , the namesake son of an ousted dictator, was sworn in as Philippine president Thursday in one of the greatest political comebacks in recent history but which opponents say was pulled off by whitewashing his family’s image. His rise to power, 36 years after an army-backed “People Power” revolt booted his father to global infamy, upends politics in the Asian democracy, where a public holiday, monuments and the Philippine Constitution stand as reminders of his father’s tyrannical rule. Download the NBC News app for breaking news and politics Activists and survivors of the martial law era under his father protested Marcos Jr.’s inauguration, which took place at a noontime ceremony at the steps of the National Museum in Manila, the capital. Thousands of police officers, including anti-riot contingents, SWAT commandos and snipers, were deployed in the bayside tourist district for security. Chinese Vice President Wang … [Read more...] about Dictator’s son Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is sworn in as Philippine president

Five officers are under investigation after a Connecticut man hit his head while handcuffed in a police van and was paralyzed last week, authorities said. City and police officials in New Haven pledged to make changes after the arrest of Richard “Randy” Cox, 36, saying officers did not treat him with dignity or provide him with safety after he was severely injured. Cox was arrested June 19 on charges of criminal possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit and other counts.A video released Wednesday by New Haven police showed that as he was being transported after his arrest, Cox slid across a bench in the back of a police van headfirst after the van suddenly stopped. The van’s driver was trying to avoid hitting another vehicle with the sudden stop, NBC Connecticut reported . The city said there are no seat belts in its police vans. At a town meeting Tuesday, Mayor Justin Elicker apologized to Cox’s mother and said the incident did not live up to the … [Read more...] about Connecticut man paralyzed after hitting head while handcuffed in police van, officials say
