Popular Bethel Restaurant Relocates To South Norwalk
1 Restaurants & Bars Taproot, a popular Bethel restaurant run by acclaimed Chef Jeff Taibe, recently relocated to the SoNo area of Norwalk. RJ Scofield , Patch Staff Posted Reply NORWALK, CT — Taproot, a popular Bethel restaurant run by acclaimed Chef Jeff Taibe, recently put down roots in a new location that is likely to excite residents of Norwalk and nearby. In April, owners Taibe and Steph Sweeney relocated their restaurant to North Main Street in the city's South Norwalk area, taking over the space previously occupied by Bruxelles Brasserie. Though the restaurant had successfully operated in Bethel since 2017, the owners felt it was time for a change. "Jeff and I have been looking around in southern Fairfield County for the last couple years and had just walked into any place that had a 'Taproot feel' like the prior Bruxelles Brasserie did," Sweeney said in an email interview with Patch. ‘After Sherman’ Review: A Family Reckoning
In the elegiac documentary “After Sherman,” cameras glide along waterways, soar above marshes, contemplate churches and travel down Southern roads lined by trees, the moss hanging like braids. Under the director Jon-Sesrie Goff’s gaze, these places are sacred, even as they remain haunted by a nation’s grievous racial history. “I’m Gullah, born in exile,” says Goff, who is based in New York, describing his place among the Gullah Geechee people of South Carolina. The film focuses on Goff’s father, the Rev. Dr. Norvel Goff Sr., a descendant of formerly enslaved people who purchased land in South Carolina after emancipation. Reverend Goff, who owns property in the Lowcountry, was also the interim pastor at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, after a self-identified white supremacist killed nine Black parishioners gathered for Bible study one evening in June 2015. While shucking oysters, son and father discuss what it means to forgive. There is nuance in … [Read more...] about ‘After Sherman’ Review: A Family Reckoning
Americans saving at near record lows: How to beef up your savings
One of the upsides of the Covid-19 pandemic was the record-high amount of cash that Americans were able to save. With fewer opportunities to shop, travel, and eat out during lockdowns, consumers could sock away the extra cash from both their paychecks (for those who kept their jobs) and the stimulus checks sent out by the federal government. The personal savings rate hit a record 34% in April 2020 . Three years later, consumer spending has risen and the savings rate has fallen significantly. In March 2023 the personal savings rate had plummeted to a near-record low of just 5.1%. Why people are savings less There are several factors driving the personal savings rate lower. Consumers are making up for lost time, taking advantage of the opportunity to travel or dine out after several years of being unable or uncomfortable doing so. A larger element driving down the personal savings rate, however, may be the high inflation rate, which has pushed up the cost of everything … [Read more...] about Americans saving at near record lows: How to beef up your savings
Restaurant Review: Fluid Japanese-French Cuisine at House Brooklyn
In December, the chef Yuji Tani opened a second edition of the highly seasonal French-Japanese restaurant he owns in Tokyo. The original, now 15 years old, is called House . The new one, in Greenpoint, is House Brooklyn . For what it’s worth, neither House is in a house. The first is in a black-glass cube in the Nishi-Azabu neighborhood. The newer House shares a reclaimed industrial space called 50 Norman with two other Japanese businesses. On the left is a shop that packs ready-to-brew dashi tea bags with a powder ground from cracked leathery mushrooms, stiff green panes of kelp, blank-eyed sardines and other things a retriever might get into on the beach at low tide. The shop’s dashi figures prominently in the traditional teishoku meal sets it serves. On the right side of the building is an arts-and-crafts store where you can buy ceramic matcha bowls, delicate handblown glass bottles and a clear skateboard embedded with daisies. House Brooklyn is all the way in … [Read more...] about Restaurant Review: Fluid Japanese-French Cuisine at House Brooklyn
