Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 LOS ANGELES (AP) — A three-day strike by workers in the Los Angeles Unified School District ended Thursday, but it wasn't immediately clear if any progress was made in negotiations for higher pay for teachers’ aides, bus drivers, custodians and other support staff in the nation's second-largest school system. Teachers joined the picket lines in solidarity, shutting down instruction for the district’s half-million students during the walkout by members of Local 99 of the Service Employees International Union, which represents about 30,000 of the lowest-paid school workers. Support staffers earn, on average, about $25,000 a year in Los Angeles, barely enough to get by in one of the most expensive cities in America. Mayor Karen Bass stepped in as mediator Wednesday after district Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho accused the union of refusing to … [Read more...] about Los Angeles school strike ends, but no deal announced

Idaho Republicans Deny Girls Free Tampons in School
Idaho State Rep. Rod Furniss offered his fellow legislators a lesson in basic biology this week. “Boys and girls have two Ps: peeing and pooping,” the Democrat from Ribgy said from the House floor on Monday as the co-sponsor of a bill to provide free menstrual products in public schools. “We know that the proper role of government is to cover the two Ps. Well, surprise, we just figured out [in] 2023, that girls have three Ps: They have peeing and pooping, and period.” He proceeded with simple facts and common sense. “Now we can hold the first two Ps, peeing and pooping. We can take care of that. But the third P, the girls don’t have a muscle down there. When that happens, it happens. It’s an emergency every time that happens. It’s a basic biological function. Is the proper role of government to cover a basic biological function? I submit to you that it is.” Among those who watched the proceedings online was Avrey Hendrix, a 35-year-old mother of four who had met with … [Read more...] about Idaho Republicans Deny Girls Free Tampons in School

Going for the Bling: Hollywood Burglars
LOS ANGELES THE gang’s nickname is still up for grabs. Four teenage girls and two men suspected of stealing jewelry and clothing from the homes of Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom and other celebrities have been tagged with a few tantalizing names since their purported crime spree came to light. “The Burglar Bunch,” trumpeted TMZ. “The Bling Ring,” rhymed The Los Angeles Times. The “Hollywood Hills Burglars,” said the Los Angeles police. The group, most 18 and 19 years old, used celebrity Web sites, according to investigators, to figure out when their victims — a roster of young Hollywood that also includes Rachel Bilson of “The O.C.,” Ashley Tisdale of “High School Musical” fame and Audrina Patridge of “The Hills”— would be attending premieres and other events and would therefore not be home. In the stars’ homes, burglars helped themselves to Rolex watches, Louis Vuitton bags and other baubles featured in celebrity magazines, authorities say. Six accused members of … [Read more...] about Going for the Bling: Hollywood Burglars
Goldman Sachs’s Top Image Maker Is Leaving
A change of messenger at Goldman Sachs For nearly a decade, Jake Siewert led Goldman Sachs ’s post-crisis efforts to shed its image as one of Wall Street’s most mysterious, and maligned, money machines. We’re the first to report that he plans to announce his departure later today. Mr. Siewert joined Goldman as its communications chief in 2012, bringing both political connections — he was a top aide to Tim Geithner when he was Treasury secretary, and spent eight years in the Clinton administration, including as White House press secretary — and experience as a senior executive at Alcoa. (Mr. Siewert’s wife, Christine Anderson, is the global head of external relations at Blackstone.) He did not have an easy job: The day after his hiring was announced, a former Goldman banker published a now-famous Op-Ed, “ Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs ,” accusing the firm of fostering a “toxic and destructive” environment. As he departs, disgruntled junior bankers at the firm have … [Read more...] about Goldman Sachs’s Top Image Maker Is Leaving
TUCKER CARLSON: The Democratic Party believes owning a gun is too much autonomy for you
close Video Tucker: You can't have guns, but faithful servants of the Democratic Party can! Fox News host Tucker Carlson gives his take on gun control legislation on 'Tucker Carlson Tonight.' NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles! If there's one thing your average liberal understands perfectly well, it's that there's safety in numbers. Don't go out alone. Bring 80 million people with you. It's safer that way. There is a reason, a fundamental reason, the Democrats are natural joiners and organizers and petition-signers and that their highest virtue is conformity. They know that as long as they're all wearing the same uniform, they'll probably be OK. This is why you'll see one person in Brookline or Bethesda raise a Ukrainian flag in the yard, and the very next day, everybody on the street will have one, too. Suddenly, it's an entire neighborhood of foreign policy experts, all specializing in Eastern European border disputes. It's amazing. … [Read more...] about TUCKER CARLSON: The Democratic Party believes owning a gun is too much autonomy for you
