Prosecutors said the man saw a bison calf separated from its mother at Yellowstone National Park and tried to push the newborn up a riverbank. However, picking up the calf caused the bison’s herd to reject it, leading to Yellowstone Park officials euthanizing it. A man from Hawaii pleaded guilty Wednesday to a charge alleging he picked up a bison calf in Yellowstone National Park, causing the animal's herd to reject it and leading park officials to kill it rather than allow it to be a hazard to visitors. Mystery On Hinsdale D86 Leader Pick Continues
2 Schools The district provided no documentation showing how a top official became acting superintendent. David Giuliani , Patch Staff Posted | Updated Replies HINSDALE, IL – It still remains unclear how Chris Covino, a top Hinsdale High School District 86 official, became the acting superintendent. Last week, Patch requested records showing who appointed Covino, assistant superintendent for academics, to the acting position. He is serving in that role while Superintendent Tammy Prentiss is taking an undefined "leave of absence." On Wednesday, the district said in an emailed response that the assistant superintendent of academics "assumes the role of acting superintendent when the Superintendent is temporarily unavailable." The email stated school board President Catherine Greenspon informed Covino by phone on May 16 that he was acting superintendent "based on his position." The district confirmed no board … [Read more...] about Mystery On Hinsdale D86 Leader Pick Continues
Hinsdale D86 Leader Pushes Back Against Board
0 Schools The acting superintendent warned it would be "very rash" to quickly reverse planned changes to social studies courses. David Giuliani , Patch Staff Posted | Updated Reply HINSDALE, IL – Hinsdale High School District 86's board appears poised to soon reverse planned changes to social studies courses, but the acting superintendent warned that such a decision could be "very rash." At last week's board meeting, member Debbie Levinthal criticized the district's plan to de-emphasize European history. Under the district's long-term plan, Advanced Placement European History will no longer be a part of the honors track for sophomores. It is being replaced by AP Modern World History. AP European History is set to become an elective for juniors and seniors. In late March, social studies department members presented the plan to the old board . A new majority took control after April's election. Most of the … [Read more...] about Hinsdale D86 Leader Pushes Back Against Board
The Trouble With the Troubled Teen Industry
THE ELISSAS: Three Girls, One Fate, and the Deadly Secrets of Suburbia , by Samantha Leach Like the Furies and the Fates of Greek mythology, the subjects of Samantha Leach’s “The Elissas” are troubled and troubling young women enacting a drama that feels both ancient and inevitable. If the addiction narrative has ascended to the level of myth in America (and it’s all too easy to argue that it has), then Elissa, Alyssa and Alissa are a familiar archetype: poor little rich girls, young and rebellious, their problems surely solvable by Daddy’s money. In this smart and gripping debut, Leach refreshes a familiar heartbreak by weaving the stories of these three lost young women into a larger, more complicated and ultimately tragic narrative of a nation not so much losing the war on drugs as on a death march every bit as doomed as the last battles in Sparta. Of the three protagonists, Elissa is the only one Leach knew personally. Growing up together in the wealthy suburbs of … [Read more...] about The Trouble With the Troubled Teen Industry
Hinsdale South Students Protest Disparity With Central
5 Schools A student said her classmates were "steered" away from a computer course, which concerned board members. David Giuliani , Patch Staff Posted | Updated Replies HINSDALE, IL – Hinsdale South High School students last week objected to the lack of course selection compared with Hinsdale Central. Regardless of its majority, the school board largely avoids talking about the gap . Six of the seven members hail from the wealthier Central zone. Because South's enrollment is half of Central's, its course selection is considerably smaller. At last week's school board meeting, three South students protested reducing the number of Advanced Placement Chemistry classes to one next year. Two classes were offered this year and three the year before, the student said. The students said 27 students were recommended for AP Chemistry, but the classroom size only permits 24. So three were rejected, they said. … [Read more...] about Hinsdale South Students Protest Disparity With Central
