By Casey Tolan , CNN Updated 1858 GMT (0258 HKT) February 27, 2023 (CNN) In the parking lot of New Jerusalem Church in Jackson, Mississippi, volunteers handed out free cases of bottled water to a line of arriving cars last week -- a new normal in a state capital that has struggled with the fallout of a failing water system . But inside the church, a parade of pastors and organizers addressing the crowd railed against another threat they described as dire to the city's future: their state legislature. Republican state lawmakers are pushing "a takeover of the city of Jackson and disenfranchising local voters," declared Danyelle Holmes, a local activist. "They're banking on us to be quiet. They're banking on us to back down." The T-shirt she wore underscored the political mood of the event -- and the siege mentality that city leaders say they're feeling: JACKSON VS. EVERYBODY. A proposal in the Mississippi legislature to reshape Jackson's criminal justice system has … [Read more...] about A proposed ‘takeover’ has sparked a battle for power in one of America’s Blackest big cities

With Judicial Overhaul Paused, U.S. Softens Tone on Netanyahu
In a sign of easing tensions in Israel after the suspension of a contentious judicial overhaul, the United States ambassador to Israel said on Tuesday that President Biden would host the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, in Washington in the coming months, but did not specify a date. The possibility of such a meeting, long coveted by Mr. Netanyahu, came after other shifts in tone overnight from the Biden administration, as Washington signaled its support for Mr. Netanyahu’s decision to delay the divisive judicial plan . But the news did not suggest a complete reset after weeks of fraught relations: The ambassador, Thomas R. Nides, said that no date had been fixed for any meeting, leaving open the possibility that it could be delayed if Mr. Netanyahu pushed ahead with the plan after a delay. The news was nevertheless one of several signs on Tuesday that emotions were calming across Israel after concerns over the judicial overhaul had set off civil unrest on a scale … [Read more...] about With Judicial Overhaul Paused, U.S. Softens Tone on Netanyahu
A Win for Israel’s Protesters
Much of life in Israel came to a halt yesterday: Hospitals stopped providing nonemergency care, planes were grounded at the country’s main airport, and malls and banks closed. The disruptions were part of an escalation in protests against the government’s proposed judicial overhaul, which has plunged Israel into one of its gravest political crises ever. The interruptions to daily life were the latest sign that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had underestimated Israelis’ opposition to his government’s proposed changes to the courts. In response to the chaos, he has relented, at least in part. Netanyahu announced yesterday that he would delay the changes until later this year . “When there is a possibility of preventing a civil war through dialogue, I, as the prime minister, take a timeout for dialogue,” he said. The announcement calmed some of the protesters and unions have called off their strikes. But it remains unclear what will happen in the coming weeks — and whether … [Read more...] about A Win for Israel’s Protesters

India can’t find a Sikh separatist leader, but its manhunt has got the world’s attention
NEW DELHI — A massive manhunt in India for a Sikh separatist leader has failed to find its target for more than a week. But authorities’ no-holds-barred search — including the deployment of thousands of paramilitary soldiers, a statewide internet blackout and a high-speed chase — has captured the attention of the nation and the world. Police accuse Amritpal Singh, a 30-year-old self-styled preacher who seeks a sovereign Sikh homeland, of disrupting communal harmony, among other mounting charges. Officials say they are worried he could stir violence in his home state of Punjab, where thousands of people were killed in the 1980s as the Indian government fought an bloody insurgency for an independent Sikh state known as Khalistan. The crackdown has unnerved the public, said Sukanya Singh, a university student in Amritsar, Punjab’s second-biggest city. “There is panic buying because we don’t know how long it will go,” the 20-year-old, whose last name is common among Sikhs … [Read more...] about India can’t find a Sikh separatist leader, but its manhunt has got the world’s attention
Netanyahu Opponents Used Dangers of ‘Reform’ by Autocrats to Sound Alarm
In proposing his judicial overhaul, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has said he was restoring the balance of power between elected lawmakers and unelected judges. “It is not the end of democracy, it is the strengthening of democracy,” Mr. Netanyahu said last week, before a huge wave of protest and civil unrest forced him to put his proposals on hold . But Mr. Netanyahu’s legalistic argument obscured what was at stake, and the outpouring on the streets has in part reflected the success of his opponents in persuading Israelis that his plan actually threatened to severely undercut their country’s democracy, not strengthen it. Key to making that case has been the example of other countries in which diminishing the judiciary has become a tool for fatally wounding democracy. “We have studied this dimension of so-called judicial reform in Hungary and Poland and Turkey, and we were aware of what was coming,” said Yaniv Roznai, a law professor at Reichman University in the … [Read more...] about Netanyahu Opponents Used Dangers of ‘Reform’ by Autocrats to Sound Alarm
