In Washington, the top two candidates advance to November, regardless of party affiliation. Non-partisan races that attract only two candidates, like for King County Prosecuting Attorney, head straight to the general election. This year, Sen. 0 Politics & Government Tuesday is Election Day for King County's August primary, and voter turnout remained below 20 percent heading into the weekend. Lucas Combos , Patch Staff Posted Reply KING COUNTY, WA — The August primary is drawing to a close and King County voters have just a handful of days left to get their ballots in the mail or to a dropbox or voting center. Voter turnout has been slow to pick up since ballots were mailed in mid-July, with just 16 percent of King County's 1.4 million registered voters having returned their ballots by Friday afternoon. King County Elections is projecting that turnout will reach 45 percent by the time polls close Tuesday night, which is in line with voter participation in the 2018 primary. The county's oldest voters have substantially outpaced younger residents, with those 65 and older casting more than double the number of ballots as voters ages 55 to 64. Election Day typically sees a surge in ballot returns, and the county projects turnout will hit 45 percent when all is said and done. Peter Welch in the Democratic Party primary Tuesday to replace retiring Democratic U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, who has held the seat since 1975 and was the last of Congress’s so-called Watergate babies. Welch, the state’s lone member of the House of Representatives, easily defeated two little-known candidates to move on to the general election in November. During the years he has been in Congress, Welch has been one of Vermont’s top vote-getters and would be an odds-on favorite to win the general election. Incumbent Republican Gov.
