A BuzzFeed News investigation uncovered a network of websites and accounts using Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and other social platforms to sow propaganda targeting Iran and Qatar. The accounts, which have now been taken down, appear to have been professionally run by PR firms based in the Middle East and Africa.In August, Facebook announced the removal of more than 350 pages and accounts it said were engaged in coordinated inauthentic activity and operated by marketing firms in Egypt and the UAE. Four men have been arrested in Honduras for the killing of Berta Cáceres—two of them associated with the company building the dam she was fighting to stop. As Nina Lakhani reported in The Guardian, “Just days before her death, she accused the Honduran company behind the dam, Desarrollos Energéticos SA (DESA), of using local thugs to terrorize her and COPINH [her organization] as they tried to mobilize opposition to its revised plan to dam their sacred river, the Gualcarque. Nick Muzin and Joey Allaham have previously attracted attention for their unconventional lobbying in the United States for Qatar. This work involved courting 250 people they believed could influence Trump’s view of the small Gulf state and earned them more than $3 million.
