In December 1978, Billy Joel headlined Madison Square Garden for the first time, playing three shows on the tour for his first No. 1 album, “52nd Street.” Dozens more performances followed there over the years, and in January 2014, Joel began a monthly residency as the Garden’s first “music franchise.” Now the monthly gig is coming to an end. On Thursday, Joel and the Garden announced his final 10 shows in the series, saying the residency will conclude in July 2024 with his 104th show in the series, which will be his 150th lifetime performance at the Garden. “I’m kind of flabbergasted that it lasted as long as it did,” Joel said at a news conference at the Garden. “My team tells me that we could continue to sell tickets, but 10 years, 150 shows — all right already!” James L. Dolan, the chief executive of MSG Entertainment, which owns the Garden and other venues, added: “Billy Joel’s franchise run has made history — not only for Madison Square Garden, but also for the music … [Read more...] about Billy Joel Will End Madison Square Garden Residency in 2024

From Fairly Low Expectations, a Wonderful Surprise
On a fall evening in 2017, Dr. Ross Martin Uhrich headed to a bar in Washington to meet a woman he had matched with on Bumble. He had low expectations. So low, in fact, that he put the ingredients for a chicken stew in his slow cooker and set a timer for two and a half hours. He planned to return home early, eat dinner, and go straight to bed — he had to be up at 4 a.m. for his surgical residency. When he arrived at Barcelona Wine Bar, he saw Jessica Carter Altman and threw his plans out the window. “I just said I’m going to let the night take me where it’s going to take me,” Dr. Uhrich said. Ms. Carter Altman had also expected a quick drink. She had just begun working as a litigation associate at the Washington office of the law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and wanted to be well rested for her second day. But very quickly, it became clear to her that the man she was on a date with was special. “We spent the first hour talking over water because we couldn’t stop talking long … [Read more...] about From Fairly Low Expectations, a Wonderful Surprise
With roots in Asia and Africa, Freddie Mercury left a legacy influenced by his background

King notes that two of those closets — which revolve around his sexuality and, later, his AIDS diagnosis — have been widely written about. Lesser known are the closets that contained his race and nationality. “Even though he existed in these four different closets, he was able to produce works out of these closets because he valued a certain kind of privacy and mystery,” King, who is currently working on a Mercury biography, said. With the Nov. 2 release of the anticipated Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody," many are reevaluating … [Read more...] about With roots in Asia and Africa, Freddie Mercury left a legacy influenced by his background
