Commodities trading at Goldman Sachs Group Inc., once a huge moneymaker and a central part of the bank’s DNA, is on the chopping block. Goldman plans cuts to its commodities arm after a monthslong review showed the business uses too much capital for too little profit, according to people familiar with the matter. Executives are discussing pulling back in some areas, such as the physical trading of iron ore, platinum and other metals, and reducing costs associated with the sprawling storage and transportation network required... … [Read more...] about Goldman Plans Cuts in Commodities Trading as New CEO Digs In

GM Billy Eppler says Angels didn’t have a ‘fire sale’ before trading deadline
By Jeff Fletcher | PUBLISHED: July 31, 2018 at 4:28 pm | UPDATED: July 31, 2018 at 4:30 pm ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — After the Angels passed the trading deadline with two of their everyday players sent elsewhere, Billy Eppler was asked about the “fire sale” characterization some have used to describe the club’s position. “A fire sale sounds like you put everything on the lawn and people just walk by and start grabbing things,” the Angels general manager said, “and that’s definitely not what happened here. Not even close.” In the days leading to Tuesday’s deadline, the Angels moved catcher Martín Maldonado and second baseman Ian Kinsler. Both players were set to be free agents at the end of the season, so the Angels turned the remaining two months they’d have with each into three minor league pitchers, two of whom are on the cusp of the majors. They didn’t make any more moves on Tuesday. Eppler said his … [Read more...] about GM Billy Eppler says Angels didn’t have a ‘fire sale’ before trading deadline
Deatrich Wise’s blueprint for success combines the mental and physical
FOXBOROUGH — Football is a complex game, and Patriots training camp can often appear frenetic. Balls fly around as different positional groups hone technique. Coaches do their best to shout instructions over Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer’’ or whatever may be blaring from the loudspeakers behind Gillette Stadium’s practice fields. Entering his second NFL season, Patriots defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. now has professional experience to draw upon during these sultry summer days. In his view, everything boils down to two simple but draining components: mental reps and physical reps. “Everything I do is mental reps or physical reps,’’ Wise said. “When I’m not in, I need to learn from the people that are in front of me or learn from the coaches’ tips.’’ By compartmentalizing those two things, Wise is beginning to realize some of his vast potential as a disruptor among New England’s defensive … [Read more...] about Deatrich Wise’s blueprint for success combines the mental and physical
Trade market focuses on relief help as deadline nears
No teams draw fewer fans to their games than the Florida clubs. Yet, like in the offseason, the Marlins and Rays are at the center of interest. Miami dealt Dee Gordon, Marcell Ozuna, Giancarlo Stanton and Christian Yelich after last season and have J.T. Realmuto at least eliciting inquiries. Tampa Bay dealt Corey Dickerson, Evan Longoria and Steven Souza in the offseason, plus Matt Andriese, Alex Colome, Nathan Eovaldi, Denard Span and Jonny Venters in season. They have Chris Archer, and there is a greater belief he will be moved than Realmuto will. Will the Nationals deal Bryce Harper? They were not averse to listening, which would have seemed impossible even two weeks ago, when he won the Home Run Derby in his home park. That speaks to the current dismaying state of the Nats, who actually have been trying to find a way to obtain Realmuto for months. Still, the best bet of all is that relievers (plenty of them) will get traded. On deadline day last year, 10 pen arms were dealt. On … [Read more...] about Trade market focuses on relief help as deadline nears
Grizzlies trade Deyonta Davis and Ben McLemore for Garrett Temple
Deyonta Davis and Ben McLemore are Grizzlies no longer. Both arrived in Memphis as physically and athletically-gifted prospects with loads of unreckoned potential at a low cost. Deyonta Davis had been a projected lottery pick, and tantalized with the makings of a modern rim-protector that could roll to the rim on the pick-and-roll. Ben McLemore was the 7th pick in his draft, and shot nearly 40 percent from deep in the season before joining the Grizzlies. Why did Deyonta fall so far in the draft? Tom Izzo blamed his shyness. Why didn’t McLemore live up to expectations in Sacramento? He languished under four head coaches in the turbulent Boogie era. Both were good buy-low bets on tremendous potential. Neither worked out, and it was time to move on. Deyonta Davis had ample opportunity to show progress as the only real backup center once Wright left. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to use his size, strength, and bounce to his advantage, with defenders routinely pushing him out … [Read more...] about Grizzlies trade Deyonta Davis and Ben McLemore for Garrett Temple
