Endangered fox seen in California park for first time in nearly 100 years

January 26, 2023 by www.sfgate.com Leave a Comment

An endangered species was recently observed prowling through the steep, rocky terrain near Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks in California for the first time in nearly a century. Trail cameras used by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife detected four sightings of at least one Sierra Nevada red fox near Taboose Pass from April 20 to June 4, 2022, according to a press release shared by the agency Tuesday. Though the snapshots provide just a glimpse of the federally endangered canine’s evening whereabouts, the sightings prove groundbreaking for researchers who are looking to find ways to bolster their tiny population. “When a species is listed as endangered, the most common scenario we see is that it doesn’t recover,” Julia Lawson, an environmental scientist for the agency, told SFGATE by phone Wednesday. “It’s really hard to recover an endangered species when you know so little about them. Knowing where they occur and what habitats are important to them will help … [Read more...] about Endangered fox seen in California park for first time in nearly 100 years

California boosts water deliveries to highest level in years thanks to storms

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 2 After near-record wet weather this month , California officials announced Thursday that they plan to significantly increase water deliveries from state-managed reservoirs, including Lake Oroville, a move likely to help ease water shortages in many communities across the state. The California Department of Water Resources estimates that it will provide 30% of the water requested by municipal and agricultural water agencies this year, up from the 5% projected in early December. While still below demand, the allocation, if it holds, would be the most water provided since 2019. The announcement provides at least some relief for cities and towns reliant on state water shipments, which include several in Santa Clara County, the East Bay’s Tri-Valley and Napa County. Many areas have been scrambling to find new water supplies while eyeing the possibility of more cuts for customers out of fear of … [Read more...] about California boosts water deliveries to highest level in years thanks to storms

The largest winery in the country, E. & J. Gallo Winery, is closing its California -based distribution operations, according to the San Francisco Business Times . Brothers Ernest and Julio Gallo founded the wine company in 1933 in Modesto, and it remains a family-owned business. E. & J. Gallo Winery owns popular, low-cost wine brands Barefoot Wine and André, as well as non-wine brands such as hard seltzer High Noon and New Amsterdam Vodka. Last year, it became the NFL's official wine sponsor. The winery's move from Gallo Sales Company, the Modesto-headquartered subsidiary of E. & J. Gallo Winery that handled distribution in California, to Texas company Republic National Distributing Company will result in mass layoffs, including senior roles. At the Hayward facility at 30825 Wiegman Road, 93 employees will be cut, and 23 in Modesto at 2612 Crows Landing Road, the Business Times reported. Gallo Sales Company plans to lay off a total of 355 workers across seven … [Read more...] about Barefoot Wine distributor to close California sites, lay off Bay Area workers

California’s Share Of Mass Shootings Remains High Despite Strict Gun Laws

January 24, 2023 by dailycaller.com Leave a Comment

California has the strictest gun control laws in the nation, but accounts for 14% of mass shooting fatalities in the U.S., the second largest number of fatalities behind Texas, according to Mother Jones’ mass shooting database. California currently requires background checks and concealed carry permits, while banning “assault weapons,” ghost guns, high-capacity magazines and handgun purchases under the age of 21. Following the three mass shootings in California in January, Democratic lawmakers began to call for more gun control in the state, but gun rights advocacy groups believe the state needs to address how the current laws have failed before adding new laws. Despite a long history of gun laws aimed at curbing gun violence in the state, 14% of U.S. mass shooting fatalities have taken place in California, making it the state with the second most mass shooting fatalities, just behind Texas, according to data reviewed by the Daily Caller News Foundation. Since 1982, there … [Read more...] about California’s Share Of Mass Shootings Remains High Despite Strict Gun Laws

‘Simply deplorable’: State investigates farmworkers’ working conditions at Half Moon Bay shooting sites

January 26, 2023 by www.latimes.com Leave a Comment

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. — The state has opened investigations into labor and workplace practices at the two sites of Monday’s fatal shootings in Half Moon Bay that left seven people dead and cast a spotlight on the lives of California’s farmworkers who often live and work in dangerous conditions. The investigation comes after Gov. Gavin Newsom visited the beach side community Tuesday, where he spoke with the victims’ families and coworkers about the deadly shooting and their workplace environments. Without naming specifics, Newsom said some farmworkers were “living in shipping containers” and working for $9 an hour, well below the state minimum wage of $15.50. Advertisement “No healthcare, no support, no services, but [they’re] taking care of our health, providing a service to us each and every day,” he said at the news conference.
