B efore he had even made his first movie, Spike Lee used to fantasize about three things: season tickets at the Garden, a brownstone in Fort Greene like the one that he was raised in and a house in the historically black Oak Bluffs section of Martha’s Vineyard. In 1986, after writing, producing, directing and acting in his infectious debut, “She’s Gotta Have It,” a stylish, edgy rom-com about a libidinous young woman juggling three lovers, those Knicks seats came first. The two homes swiftly followed, and within a decade, Lee’s status and celebrity had catapulted him, practically against his will, from Da Republic of Brooklyn, as he likes to call it in emails, into a 8,200-square-foot Upper East Side townhouse that was previously home to Jasper Johns. But the getaway in Massachusetts, situated next to the 18th hole at the Farm Neck Golf Club, has never required upgrading. As I was preparing to visit him there this summer, Lee warned me that the second week of August is when … [Read more...] about The Culture Caught Up With Spike Lee — Now What?

Maplewood, N.J.: If Brooklyn Were a Suburb
Just call it “Brooklyn West.” That’s how many of the residents of Maplewood think of their town, especially those who have followed the typical migration pattern of moving from Manhattan to Brooklyn to Maplewood, which they see as an extension of the hip, cultured, community-involved lifestyle they’d grown accustomed to in New York. “A lot of like-minded transplants have come here from various enclaves of the city seeking the same kind of life in a suburban setting, which happens to be a beautiful setting, with parks and rolling hills and colonial houses,” said Alexis Robie, a television producer who moved here from Greenwood Heights, Brooklyn, last October with his wife, Corie, and two young children. They bought a 1920 side-hall colonial with three bedrooms and one full and two half baths, paying $630,000. Bonnie Ramsey, a recent arrival from Park Slope, Brooklyn, agreed, noting that she and her husband, Matt, and their three children were “welcomed with open arms” when they … [Read more...] about Maplewood, N.J.: If Brooklyn Were a Suburb

Thousands of Florida residents still recovering from Hurricane Ian as new storm season begins
close Video Fox News Flash top headlines for May 30 Fox News Flash top headlines are here. Check out what's clicking on Foxnews.com. Eight months ago, chef Michael Cellura had a restaurant job and had just moved into a fancy new camper home on Fort Myers Beach. Now, after Hurricane Ian swept all that away, he lives in his older Infiniti sedan with a 15-year-old long-haired chihuahua named Ginger. Like hundreds of others, Cellura was left homeless after the Category 5 hurricane blasted the barrier island last September with ferocious winds and storm surge as high as 15 feet. Like many, he's struggled to navigate insurance payouts, understand federal and state assistance bureaucracy and simply find a place to shower. "There's a lot of us like me that are displaced. Nowhere to go," Cellura, 58, said during a recent interview next to his car, sitting in a commercial parking lot along with other storm survivors housed in recreational vehicles, a … [Read more...] about Thousands of Florida residents still recovering from Hurricane Ian as new storm season begins
Democrats: No Border Security Bill Until Citizens Accept More Poor Migrants
Democrats will block a border security bill until American citizens accept more poor migrants into their workplaces and neighborhoods, Texas Democrat Rep. Barbara Lee told a GOP-led hearing on Tuesday. “You’re not going to get border security coming first,” Lee told a GOP-picked witness, Rodney Scott, the former chief of the U.S. Border Patrol, who urged legislators to first protect the border before opening up more legal routes for migrants. She continued: You need to be able to balance it. You will not accept a border security and recognizing pathways to legal entry [bill]? … When the late [Sen. ] John McCain, we had a very strong comprehensive bill — and it had border security a nd the legal pathway. Lee’s frank statement exposed the core politics of migration: Democrats — and their bipartisan business and media allies — will block any border security bill unless the GOP votes to let them legally import more poor migrant workers, consumers, renters, and poor people … [Read more...] about Democrats: No Border Security Bill Until Citizens Accept More Poor Migrants
