The House on Friday passed the $700 billion Inflation Reduction Act, which, unlike its moniker, would not reduce inflation, and instead spends hundreds of billions of dollars on climate change and Obamacare programs. The House passed the legislation along partisan lines, 220-207. The vote featured no Democrats voting against the bill and no Republicans voting for the bill. This includes Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME), a swing district Democrat who voted against the American Rescue Plan and the Build Back Better Act. Breitbart News reported on Thursday that House Republican leadership would whip Republicans against the legislation to ensure that zero Republicans vote for the bill. Since the legislation uses budgetary reconciliation, Republicans cannot stop Democrats from passing the bill; however, one senior House Republican staffer explained that they plan on making Democrats “own” the bill, which includes highlighting the deleterious effects of the bill. The legislation would: … [Read more...] about Congress Passes $700 Billion ‘Inflation Reduction’ Act

Dems near congressional passage of climate, health package
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats pushed their flagship climate change and health care bill toward House passage Friday, placing President Joe Biden on the brink of a back-from-the-dead triumph on his leading domestic goals that the party hopes will energize voters going into November’s elections. The narrowly divided House was poised to approve the legislation, which is but a shadow of the larger, more ambitious plan to supercharge environment and social programs that Biden and his party envisioned early last year. Even so, Democrats were thirsty to declare victory on top-tier goals such as providing Congress’ largest ever investment in curbing carbon emissions, reining in pharmaceutical costs and taxing large companies and show they can wring accomplishments out of a frequently gridlocked Washington that disillusions many voters. Democrat Tim Ryan Cheerleads for China’s TikTok Despite Security Warning from House Admin Office
Democrat member of Congress and Ohio Senate candidate Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) continues to ask his constituents to follow him on communist China’s TikTok despite security warnings from the House of Representatives Chief Administrative Office, and despite him pushing a “tough on China” message in his Ohio senate campaign. Rep. Ryan, who is running against Republican J.D. Vance for the Senate, was one of the earliest adopters of TikTok in the House, and has one of the largest followings of any member of Congress. Despite security warnings, he continues to advertise his account to constituents on his official congressional Twitter account. Tim Ryan supports TikTok (screenshot) According to Politico , the House Chief Administrative Office sent a two-page memo to House employees Tuesday warning them against downloading or using TikTok, due to security and privacy concerns. Inflation Reduction Act may have little impact on inflation
WASHINGTON (AP) — With inflation raging near its highest level in four decades, the House on Friday gave final approval to President Joe Biden's landmark Inflation Reduction Act. Its title raises a tantalizing question: Will the measure actually tame the price spikes that have inflicted hardships on American households? Economic analyses of the proposal suggest that the answer is likely no — not anytime soon, anyway. The legislation, which the Senate passed earlier this week and now heads to the White House for Biden's signature, won't directly address some of the main drivers of surging prices — from gas and food to rents and restaurant meals. Still, the law could save money for some Americans by lessening the cost of prescription drugs for the elderly, extending health insurance subsidies and reducing energy prices. It would also modestly cut the government's budget deficit, which might slightly lower inflation by the end of this decade. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget … [Read more...] about Inflation Reduction Act may have little impact on inflation
Associated Press: ‘Liz Cheney of Wyoming Is Bracing for Defeat’
Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), who has been “ excommunicated ” by the Wyoming Republican Party, “is bracing for defeat” heading into Tuesday’s primary, the Associated Press (AP) warned Thursday. The AP acknowledged that Cheney could be the eighth Republican to lose her seat after voting to impeach former President Donald Trump in 2021. If Cheney loses her primary bid against Trump-endorsed Harriet Hageman on Tuesday, only two pro-impeachment Republicans would remain in Congress after the vote. Cheney’s defeat would solidify the 2021 impeachment vote as one of the most career-wrecking votes in congressional history. Four pro-impeachment members opted to retire and not compete in a GOP primary, and with Rep. Peter Meijer (R-MI) and Rep. Tom Rice’s (R-SC) primary ousters, the two impeachment Republicans who could remain are Reps. David Valadao (R-CA) and Dan Newhouse (R-WA). The impeachment Republicans who did not run in 2022 are Reps. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), Anthony Gonzalez (R-OH), … [Read more...] about Associated Press: ‘Liz Cheney of Wyoming Is Bracing for Defeat’
Conservative push to alter Constitution focuses on primaries
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 DENVER (AP) — The fliers piled up in mailboxes in central South Dakota like snow during a high-plains blizzard: “Transgender Sex Education in Schools?” one asked. “Vote Against Sex Ed Radical Mary Duvall for State Senate.” The mailers were part of a $58,000 campaign against the five-term Republican lawmaker, an enormous sum of money in a place where the cost of running for a statehouse seat is typically in the low five figures. Despite the subject of the attack ads, Duvall was targeted not for her stance on sex education but for her opposition to a longshot bid by some conservatives to force a convention to amend the U.S. Constitution. “I knew they were angry at me, but I had no idea this was going to be coming during my primary campaign,” said Duvall, who ended up losing her race by 176 votes. Duvall opposed legislation that would have added South Dakota to 19 … [Read more...] about Conservative push to alter Constitution focuses on primaries
