If you're a mom or a caregiver, you already know that the amount of thankless, unsung work we did was barely manageable before the pandemic. But now, thanks in part to Trump's failure to listen to the scientists and to actually deal with the reality of the Covid virus, so many of our children are not back to school, as they are in Europe. So now, we have an extra job that is more maddening, more stressful than anything we had before -- educating our children remotely. … [Read more...] about Dear White women, let’s not fall for Trump’s racist bet on us
What got to me most about the Krug "performance" was a video that surfaced of a talk she did at Harlem's Studio Museum about her involvement with a community-led police monitoring group called Harlem Cop Watch. As someone who actually grew up in the Bronx and actively reported on police violence in the 1990s, I was repulsed when I watched her self-righteous rant about her youth in the Bronx constantly witnessing acts of police brutality, describing one against her brother, and even alluding to the horrific police shooting of Amadou Diallo in 1999, which she claimed happened "around the corner from my home." … [Read more...] about The most hurtful part of Jessica Krug pretending to be Black
Trump can't win if the election is about him. He needs to make the election about Biden. And Trump seems to know this. That's why he oddly keeps blaming the country's problems on Biden as if Trump was the challenger -- not the incumbent. But I believe voters have a good sense that the pandemic, which has led to the economic shock of the last few months, was mishandled by no one else but the Trump administration. … [Read more...] about The three writers who could cost Trump the election
And after a recent Republican National Convention engineered to put Black Americans and women front and center, this reality is even more pressing. The truth is that the convention featured more African American speakers (12) than serve in the West Wing, in the Cabinet and as US Attorneys, combined, in the Trump administration. Similarly, high-profile and prominently placed women speaking at the RNC painted a thin coat of purported feminism over the proceedings. But no one should be fooled, given the party's hostility to women's rights over several decades and the multiple accusations of sexual harassment against Trump (which he denies). The President himself has boasted of grabbing women's genitals, bragged about his refusal to change diapers (dismissing the latter as women's work), and incessantly made derogatory remarks about women. … [Read more...] about Two anniversaries Trump is dishonoring
To John Ridley's credit, his op-ed didn't ask for permanent removal of "Gone With the Wind" from HBO Max, but rather for it to be pulled back until it could be framed with appropriate statements and framing. The question is whether a simple "trigger warning," readily skipped or ignored, does much to "contextualize" the film -- not to mention why such words weren't already available and in place, given that HBO and CNN sister channel TCM (also owned by WarnerMedia) had addressed the film's problematic aspects last year, during its 80th anniversary. … [Read more...] about It turns out your favorite movie is racist.
