Houston mayor: Biden visit ‘would not be a distraction’

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner Sylvester Turner Biden pledges support for Texas amid recovery from winter storm Biden turns focus to winter storm with Texas trip Houston mayor: Biden visit 'would not be a distraction' MORE (D) said Sunday he did not believe a visit to Texas by President Biden Joe Biden House Democrats pass sweeping .9T COVID-19 relief bill with minimum wage hike Biden to hold virtual bilateral meeting with Mexican president More than 300 charged in connection to Capitol riot MORE would be a “distraction” after winter storms devastated the state’s energy grid. “We certainly would welcome him and he would not be a distraction, [nor] a burden,” Turner said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday. The mayor told CBS’ Margaret Brennan that the city’s areas of greatest need involved restoring plumbing infrastructure affected by the winter weather. “With so many homes across the city having pipes that burst because of the frigid weather, and major leaks, major water damage, we need a lot of plumbing materials and supplies right now. We have a number of licensed plumbers but could use even more,” he said. Lucky to be alive, Tiger Woods faces difficult recovery

LOS ANGELES — In a career filled with remarkable comebacks, Tiger Woods faces perhaps his toughest recovery of all. Woods was driving alone through a sweeping, downhill stretch of road through coastal suburbs of Los Angeles when his SUV struck a sign, crossed over a raised median and two oncoming lanes flipped several times before coming to rest on its side. Its airbags deployed. A sheriff’s deputy poked his head through a hole in the windshield to see Woods, still wearing his seatbelt, sitting in the driver’s seat. The crash caused “significant” injuries to his right leg and he underwent what was described as a “long surgical procedure” at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Anish Mahajan, the chief medical officer, said Woods shattered tibia and fibula bones in multiple locations. He suffered “open fractures,” meaning the skin was broken. The bones were stabilized by a rod in the tibia. He said a combination of screws and pins were used for injuries in the ankle and foot. A statement on his Twitter account said he was awake, responsive and recovering. “I will say that it’s very fortunate that Mr. Woods was able to come out of this alive,” said Carlos Gonzalez, the deputy from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department who was the first on the scene after a neighbor called 911. No charges were filed, and police said there was no evidence he was impaired. The golf world was stunned by the news. “As if his body hasn’t endured enough,” Jon Rahm, the No. 2 player in the world, said from the Workday Championship in Florida. “I just hope he can get out of the hospital after recovery and he can still play with his kids and have a normal life.” Dr. Joseph Patterson, an orthopedic trauma surgeon at Keck Medicine of USC in Los Angeles, said injuries like those sustained by Woods are among the most common seen in hospital emergency rooms. Patterson didn’t treat Woods and wouldn’t comment specifically about the golfer’s injuries but said the risk of ...

‘Really Good Step In The Right Direction’ For Philadelphia Restaurants As Some COVID Restrictions Relaxed

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — For many Philadelphia restaurant and business owners, Friday’s announcement of the loosening of some COVID restrictions is good news. It’s no secret, it’s been a tough year for our city’s restauranteurs. “Extremely hard, I mean once-in-a-lifetime kind of situation,” Bobby Saritsoglou said. Take Saritsoglou’s restaurant, Stina, off 17th and Snyder for example. He opened months before the pandemic and has now pivoted to a vibrant takeout business with a healthy share of outdoor dining. “For us, it’s working out really good,” Saritsoglou said. On Friday, the city announced changes to its rules to make it a bit easier for local restaurants. They go into effect Monday, March 1. Outdoor dining is now capped at six people per table — up from 4 — and those six outdoor diners do not have to be from the same household. “This is a really good step in the right direction for us,” Nicole Marquis said. She’s also the founder of Save Philly Restaurants, a group pushing for the safe reopening of the city’s eateries, and says she’s glad the city eased the outdoor restrictions. “Six people dining together outside at restaurants is inherently safer than six people from different households gathering at someone’s home or living room,” Marquis said. Just two weeks ago, the city allowed indoor dining to resume at 50% capacity if certain air filtration requirements are met. Marquis has already spent thousands preparing her restaurant to safely operate with more people and is simply glad to be on the road to recovery. “Today was still the first day the staff and I felt that things like ...

FDA Advisers Endorse Emergency Use For Johnson & Johnson’s One-Dose COVID-19 Vaccine

WASHINGTON (CBS/AP) — U.S. health advisers endorsed a one-dose COVID-19 vaccine from Johnson & Johnson on Friday, putting the nation on the cusp of adding an easier-to-use option to fight the pandemic. The Food and Drug Administration is expected to quickly follow the recommendation and make J&J’s shot the third vaccine authorized for emergency use in the U.S. Vaccinations are picking up speed, but new supplies are urgently needed to stay ahead of a mutating virus that has killed more than 500,000 Americans. After daylong discussions, the FDA panelists voted unanimously that the benefits of the vaccine outweighed the risks for adults. If the FDA agrees, shipments of a few million doses could begin as early as Monday. READ MORE: Fire Crews Rush To Battle Burning House In Delaware County The FDA confirms that it is slightly less effective overall than the Moderna and Pfizer shots, but the Johnson & Johnson vaccine showed 85% efficacy against several illness. It also showed complete protection against death from COVID-19, 28 days after getting the shot. More than 47 million people in the U.S., or 14% of the population, have received at least one shot of the two-dose vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, which FDA authorized in December. But the pace of vaccinations has been strained by limited supplies and delays due to winter storms. While early J&J supplies will be small, the company has said it can deliver 20 million doses by the end of March and a total of 100 million by the end of June. J&J’s vaccine protects against the worst effects of COVID-19 after one shot, and it can be stored up to three months at refrigerator temperatures, making it easier to handle than the previous vaccines, which must be frozen. One challenge in rolling out the new vaccine will be explaining how protective the J&J shot is after the astounding success of the first U.S. vaccines. Some experts fear that lower number could feed public perceptions that ...

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A Bear, Delaware, man has been arrested in connection with a shooting incident at Pat’s King of Steaks in South Philadelphia. The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office announced firearm violations charges against 22-year-old Darius Blalock on Friday night. But workers, customers, and passersby were all endangered. Neighbors were terrified by this individual’s criminal actions last December,” District Attorney Larry Krasner said. “Philadelphia Police and Delaware law enforcement worked diligently to make sure this individual’s gun ownership privileges are revoked and that he is held accountable for his actions. I also want to express gratitude to members of the public who provided information to authorities that enabled us to bring this individual to justice.” Philly Police identified Blalock through surveillance video and tips from the public. Authorities say he does not have a valid concealed weapons license in either Pennsylvania or Delaware.
