The University of North Carolina School of Medicine attempted to update its curriculum to adopt social justice advocacy requirements without alerting the public, according to documents obtained by National Association of Scholars (NAS) Senior Fellow and Director of University Policy John Sailer. The Department of Allied Health Sciences formed a task force to recommend policies it could implement to embed social justice in its curriculum, but administrators attempted to keep all information internal, according to emails obtained by Sailer. “The UNC Board of Governors likewise passed a prohibition against compelled speech, which will likely put an end to mandatory DEI statements — a groundbreaking policy. But if UNC is serious about supporting academic freedom, and pushing back against the ever-narrowing orthodoxy on campus, they need to know what they’re up against,” Sailer told the Daily Caller News Foundation. New source of water found in moon samples from China mission
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Scientists have discovered a new and renewable source of water on the moon for future explorers in lunar samples from a Chinese mission. Water was embedded in tiny glass beads in the lunar dirt where meteorite impacts occur. These shiny, multicolored glass beads were in samples returned from the moon by China in 2020. The beads range in size from the width of one hair to several hairs; the water content was just a miniscule fraction of that, said Hejiu Hui of Nanjing University, who took part in the study. Since there are billions if not trillions of these impact beads, that could amount to substantial amounts of water, but mining it would be tough, according to the team. “Yes, it will require lots and lots of glass beads,” Hui said in an email. “On the other hand, there are lots and lots of beads on the moon." These beads could continually yield water thanks to the constant bombardment by hydrogen in the solar wind. The findings, published … [Read more...] about New source of water found in moon samples from China mission
SpaceX Says It Plans to Send a Probe to Mars
Next stop: Mars? In December, Space Exploration Technologies Corporation of Hawthorne, Calif., better known as SpaceX, landed a rocket on Earth, flying a booster stage of one of its Falcon 9 rockets back to Cape Canaveral. This month, the company repeated the feat even more impressively, setting the booster down on a floating platform in the Atlantic. Now SpaceX, Elon Musk’s rocket company, has its sights set farther away: It aims to land one of its capsules on the surface of Mars in May 2018, the company announced in a Twitter message on Wednesday. The Cure for UTIs? It’s Not Cranberries
Misconception: Drinking buckets of cranberry juice can cure, and even prevent bladder, infections. Actually: You may enjoy the taste (see: vodka) but it won’t cure and, probably, won’t prevent recurrence. This purported remedy is centuries old and there is a considerable amount of research investigating it. While some studies suggest that cranberry may reduce repeated infections in younger women, it is certainly not a treatment for an active case. The gold standard for treatment is antibiotics. Sometimes doctors just recommend rest and ibuprofen. “I was hoping it would work,” said Dr. Manisha Juthani-Mehta , an infectious disease specialist at the Yale School of Medicine, and the lead author of a study published Thursday in the journal JAMA, which showed no reduction in urinary tract infections for female nursing home patients who took standardized, high-dose cranberry capsules — the equivalent of 20 ounces of juice daily — for a year. “I’m not sure it’s worth spending … [Read more...] about The Cure for UTIs? Urinary Tract Infections Affect Millions. The Cures Are Faltering.
For generations, urinary tract infections, one of the world’s most common ailments , have been easily and quickly cured with a simple course of antibiotics. But there is growing evidence that the infections, which afflict millions of Americans a year, mostly women, are increasingly resistant to these medicines, turning a once-routine diagnosis into one that is leading to more hospitalizations , graver illnesses and prolonged discomfort from the excruciating burning sensation that the infection brings. The New York City Department of Health has become so concerned about drug-resistant U.T.I.s, as they are widely known, that it introduced a new mobile phone app this month The department’s research found that a third of uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by E. coli — the most common type now — were resistant to Bactrim, one of the most widely used drugs, and at least one fifth of them were resistant to five other common treatments. “This is crazy. This is … [Read more...] about Urinary Tract Infections Affect Millions. The Cures Are Faltering.
